Only case I could see it being a problem:
If each port on the device cannot be negotiated independently.
I've seen some devices (normally very LOW LOW end stuff) advertised as supporting "10/100" but which actually only support one speed or the other for all ports simultaneously. I've even seen these cr@ppy devices advertised as switches, altho they really aren't.
Rare, to be sure. But tearing your hair out over something like that can really bring home the importance of checking and double-checking equipment specs very carefully.
