Safeway is correct in my opinion....Having just gone through the application process for medical school recently I can say I'd have gotten in more places if I had a race card to play....I mean look at the average scores of students at the "minority focused" schools...they're lower...I'm not speculating as to why, just saying if I was American Indian, or a URM I'd have been MUCH more successful. I know of people who used a quarter of their heritage for this reason. Its ridiculous.

It may be, but I didn't write that.

What I said wasn't a stereotype. I didn't say every single white person doesn't distinguish between half black and black. But I live in a place called reality and just because YOU don't seem to have a mailing address here doesn't make my statement any less true.

You said "Half black is still black to white people." You didn't leave any room for exceptions, you made a broad statement and claimed that this is what white people think.

As both half white and half black I can confirm that statement. I can also add that it's not only whites who consider me and other mixed race people black--everyone does. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but in my experience (my entire life), I've always been the "black kid" or the "black guy."

If I'm in a room with 5 black people and 5 white people, and we're being separated by race, guess which group I'll join 99% of the time?

On the topic of AA, it does help to be black, and most people that are half black consider themselves black. This correlation doesn't prove anything though. From my own experiences, I know that people define their racial identity as children, long before they ever think about applying to college.

91TTZ, if someone who is half black, Barrack Obama for instance, decided to say that he is white, would you not agree he would sound like a fool? The fact that we can't be considered white at all is what makes me and others call ourselves black.

it'll take a lot longer than 500 yrs...logistically its just not possible to do it in 20 or so generations

Maybe, but probably not too much longer. Think of how far we've come in the last 500 years...that was about when Columbus landed on America and now I can hop on a plane and be on the other side of the globe in less than a day. People are on the move more and more. Think of how far we've come in the past 40 years with segregation (and how far we still have to go). In this country, back then you could be hung from a tree for dating outside of your race.

You can say you're half white. That's accurate. Besides, it's not as if I'd view you any differently depending on your level of whiteness. There are so many as*holes out there that I'm not about to be choosy depending on what color someone is. Whether a person is nice or not is what matters to me.

as close minded as most people are in the western world...how long do you think it'll take till most people in other parts of the world consider it ok to marry outside of their race, religion and nationality.

not you maybe, but many other people do see it that way. my roommate is extremely conservative and told me that a black guy couldn't win. i pointed out that obama is half-white, but he just looked at me and said, "no, he's black."

and this is in philadelphia, i just wonder what the sentiment is like in some of the more conservative states.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld when Elaine thought her boyfriend was Black and he though she was Mexican. 🙂

When everyone tells you you're black, basically you're black. I'm mixed 50/50 black/white. My entire family that I know is white. I grew up in the burbs.

There are those benefits. However, when someone asks what I am I always say mixed. On applications and stuff I always check black.

 to everything you said.

I would agree with this, I am mixed race as well, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, English, French to be exact. I have always considered myself Chinese, because I grew up with my Chinese/Japanese mother, who sees herself as Chinese. I have half Chinese friends that consider themselves white because they grew up with a white parent. I associated with this race long before I even understood what AA was or any benefits I would receive from it.

But yes, on applications I mark the box for Asian, on St. Pat?s Day I am Irish, my English last name is Thomas and I never tell anyone I am French 😉

Are you kidding? Philly is almost as bad as Boston in terms of racism.

Never see too many Asians in jail.

Come to So Cal and check out San Gabriel area....every "race" or "group" of people has its problems. Although I didn't attend Arcadia Highschool (a highschool where many of my college peers apparantly went) they said there were two kinds of people: those who studied, and those who were in gangs.

lmfao

I graduated from Arcadia in 06 and I can tell you personally that it is full of more wangsters than g-unit. The school is definitely defined by the academics....but the gang scene was anything but one at all.

There are little to no gangsters in Arcadia, where the average house is probably around ~750k

I guess then in the United States of America the culture is the follow. According to the majority it seems:

Native American + Irish or Spanish or English or Scottish or French = "White" For example, Chuck Norris, Billy Bob Thorton, Johnny Depp, Jessica Biel and many more.

Why? Because of racism or perception?

Jessica Biel is just gorgeous! ha ha ha.
