Mixed nuts

What I'm looking for

I love eating mixed nuts for a snack as well as in various salads & meals I prepare. I usually buy them at my local grocery store, but they tend to be expensive and covered in salt. So, I'm wondering:

1. Where do you guys buy mixed nuts?
2. Does anywhere sell them in huge quantities (5lbs+)?
3. Is it possible to get them unsalted?
4. How long before they go bad (salted vs. unsulated)?


What I've found so far

Planters Deluxe Mixed Nuts: $26.74 for two 32.5 ounce units. Salted.
Planters Mixed Nuts: $30.10 for two 56 ounce units, although these are supposedly mostly peanuts. Salted.
Kirkland Mixed Nuts: $32.99 for two 40 ounce units. Salted (I think).

Uh, the local grocery store has huge bulk bins of these things.

not sure if any are in your area, but they have like 3 or 4 bays of various nuts. they literally have like 12 different kinds of cashews, full salt, 1/2 salt, 1/4 salt, jumbo, crushed, etc. plus they are considerably cheaper than Giant, Shopper's, Bloom, etc.

I too have realized that Trader Joe's has the best selection with the most reasonable prices on nuts and other hard-to-finds. It's easy to find one pound bags of things like cashews at something like $5. It's awesome.

Costco might also be an option. They often have big bags of this stuff.

Ah, good call. I love Trader Joe's, but it's a bit far from my house for regular visits. However, I guess I can go from time to time and buy some mixed nuts in bulk. Thanks for the advice folks

I do the trader joe's thing to and then roll my own:
1 bag walnut halves and pieces
1 bag unsalted almonds
1 bag unsalted peanuts

I think they're a pound each but can't remember for sure. comes out to about $15

5 lbs is not bulk...sorry, couldn't resist :laugh:.

Seriously though, I just get different types from the bulk food section at my grocery store - almonds, walnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds etc. Those are unsalted. I also get the premixed trail mix with dried fruit in it (unsalted nuts).

I'm not sure how long they last; I usually buy 2-3 lbs total which lasts 2 weeks, so I eat them all before they have a chance to go bad. I'm guessing even the unsalted nuts would have a shelf life of at least 2-3 months.

oh i also add in some honey nut cheerios. it adds a bit of sweetness but still keeps the crunch (unlike raisins). It's cheap and could extend the amount of time until you have to remix again.
