For someone that runs an eBay business, a hatch is the only way I can go about easily transporting HUGE laser printers, 32" to 42" LCDs and plasma TVs and various other items. Otherwise, I'd have to borrow someone else's SUV or pickup truck. Not only that, I don't have to ever worry about getting my rear seats dirty and I ALWAYS have room for just about everything.
Ah well, not that seems like quite the viable reason to own a vehicle with a copious and open trunk space. Personally, I rarely use my trunk as it is. For example, I prefer putting groceries on the floor behind my seats so they don't roll around in the trunk.
Although sometimes hatches are kinda bad looking... like the Cobalt Hatch (I think that's what it was...). My brother rented a car and that's what he got... it looked like a hearse.
