I personally am getting very tired of screwball unelectable candidates chumming the water...

1. The major questions I have is would he have to go so far right he would be a shadow of himself?

2. Would his privatization history here in Indiana be a positive or a negative in a general election?

3. Would his stint in the cabinet of the decider be so much of a negative that his fiscal record in Indiana would be obscured?

4. Would he lose badly to a Birther-nutter in the primary?

If he could make his privatization plans for the country a little clearer and distance himself from the wingnuts I would seriously consider voting for him over Obama.

Maybe...

I am of the belief that the GOP nominee will be a governor since they have the most success as President.

President's usually get elected based on media appeal and their ability to tell people how great they are, not results (See 2008)

Mitch isn't very outspoken, although he has a pretty solid track record. I don't think the media would fall in love with him.

I think he would make a great VP... give him full control of budget planning and let somebody else do the politics part. There are zero qualifications required to be VP, so he's way ahead of the curve on that one.

President's usually get elected based on fear and their ability to manipulate the polls in Florida, not results (see 2004 and 2000 respectively).

Mitch has a stellar record as a governor with record surplus's with little gutting of the social network here in Indiana. He worked well with Dem's and old timers like Lugar and has broad supprort from his constituents..

He has made some missteps in privitization which is my biggest question mark going forward. I do not hold his time as Bush's budget man when the surplus turned into the mess were in now...

Sad that the thread about the comb over birther has more hits..

The media in general is going to seriously fall in hate with anyone threatening the Messiah's throne. FoxNews already loves whomever is running against the Messiah, even if they don't know his or her name at the moment. Short of Jesus returning and announcing for the Pubbie nomination, those reactions are set in stone, as witnessed by the way John McCain (R-Media) was suddenly out of favor when he received the Republican nomination. Scratch that - to get the mainstream media behind a Republican it would have to be Muhammed returning, and no way he'd join the party that opposes his religion pushing out Christianity.

Personally I like Daniels a lot and I'd support him for President. But I suspect Obama is going to be very difficult to beat and that the Republicans will nominate someone sure to lose to appease the Tea Party, so I'm expecting a return to the Libertarian ticket for the 'Possum. Having already experienced Walks-On-Water's Presidency, it's going to be hard to consider him scary enough to make me vote Republican, and chances of the Republicans nominating someone I actually WANT to vote for are slim going by past history.

His ties to the bush admin are a deal breaker.

Was mitch the budget director for bush for 2 years or 4? I cant remember those days so well anymore lol..

Ya the trickle down double down didn't work but he was executing the budget that Bush wanted at the time so I would at least temper your criticism a little.

I do agree with Pesh about the roads.....INFRASTRUCTURE PLEASE!

He was Bush's budget director. If he didn't agree with Bush's budget, he should have resigned. "I was just following orders" is not going to fly. He has no leg to stand on on budgetary matters.

Mitch would be an excellent President, but you'd have to give him a Congress to work with instead of the current set of idiots in Congress (both D and R). Case in point:

The $2.13 trillion budget Daniels submitted to Congress in 2001 made deep cuts in many agencies, with few of the spending cuts actually being approved by Congress.

Mitch isn't far enough right on social issues, so he won't get far.

He served as Director from January 2001 through June 2003-wikipedia

that would put him in for the first round of tax cuts but not the second if I remember correctly.

While I do agree that Bush Fubared the economy with those tax cuts Mitch's record has been very moderate in the state of Indiana.

Brian Bosma-R- the first year Daniels was in office here in Indy as Gov threw a fit when he had a bunch of tax increases in his first budget. His budgetary discipline in Indiana has been pretty good by all accounts..

His biggest gaffe for me was the privatization of the toll roads which eventually turned out to be a bad deal....

Now Daniels knew that capping the property tax in Indiana would be popular and helped get him reelected but revenues went down considerably. He did offset those losses with some painful cuts but the state did fairly well till the economic downturn...

I still have a little faith in the base of the old party. Its bound to come back someday since being in the middle and specifically being a libertarian didnt do them much good....

If daniels can raise enough money to be competitive he may have a shot..

He also has the lack of height factor -- doesn't the tallest candidate generally win? :D

I ran into him a couple of times at a Greek restaurant in Indy. He is really tiny.

I suspect that we'll see in the next 5-10 years the results of Mitch's policies and the effects of the IL tax increases. Hiring has been picking up here pretty significantly recently, and I think Mitch set us up well to be able to leverage an economic recovery quite a bit. Nobody is going to agree with 100% of his decisions, but it's pretty clear in retrospect that all the decisions he has made have been with a long term, responsible outlook, at least in his intent. I've never gotten the impression that he makes decisions based solely on their political appeal.

Was it Athens on 86th?

I have met the man and spoke to him at lenght at the Carmel Arts center fund raiser and while his presence is subdued the man can take over a room..

They should let him speak nationally sometime. His down to earth demeanor would actually work for most of the county.

at least he doesnt drawl like Barbour...

Khoury's in Broad Ripple, off 62nd St. He might go to Athens as well, but he must love Khoury's because I don't go there very often and I ran into him and his family there at least twice.

He is an exceptionally smart man.
