i'm curious how it got "misplaced" ... did he leave it in a cab? was it stolen from his house/office? did he give it to a hooker as payment for 10 minutes of unsatisfying sex?

But on the other hand, this guy is a researcher at MIT.

Yep, my wife as a graduate student had her purse stolen out of a lab. It was in a drawer but obviously people had seen her put in in there.
