Misuse of the word "gay" will earn you a vacation from AnandTech.

The word, gay means happy. In current usage, it also refers to homosexuality. It is NOT a generealize word referring anything and everything negative.

We have a number of members who are homosexual, whether or not you happen know who they are. Using the word the word Gay in that manner is offensive to them and to us. Effective immediately, doing so will win you a vacation from AnandTech Forums.

Do not write us about it. Do not post about it. This is not going to change.

Since the word eB@y is forbidden, most people use the word eGay instead. eG@y is typically used in the Hot Deals and FS/FT forums where people don't usually say "oh that's so gay". Will we get in trouble for saying eGay? If so, what word should we use instead?

here's a post I wrote for netopia's thread

While I think that its ok to express opinions, I think the mods made the right choice. Its ok to call someone gay if they really are, it isn't derrogatory, but since when is it such a horrible thing for a person to be gay or homosexual? Promoting the misuse of the word "gay" when referring to homosexuality is perpetuating intollerance, especially among more impressionable people. Maybe some people think its too "PC" to restrict what people say, I think it creates a better environment on the board when people can respect each other and act in a way that is appropriate for intelligent discussion. When someone says "STFU you queer" (or anything similar) because they disagree over something, maybe anything as simple as not liking the same kinds of music, its childish and I'd like to think most people here are above that. Not to mention the implications of what they are saying to anyone homosexual. A person should be able to set their own bounds in the realm of what is appropriate, but when they can't do it themselves, then they have a serious lack of taste and the mods have every right and reason to make that clear.

how come we let minorities make a big stink and rule the way the rest of us live our lives?
and of course you can say Ebay silly.

In retrospect, it is probably a good idea to leave this thread open for member comment. Of course, I'm not the moderator who posted it, so I'll probably get popped for this.

By way of further explanation, no we did not receive any complaints from our homosexual membership on this issue. We discussed it and decided that the use of the word "gay" as an expletive falls in to the same category as the use of the word "great person" or "beloved patriot".

Just as a Black or a Mexican have no choice in their skin color, we believe that a homosexual has no choice in their orientation. We will not allow the word "gay" to become a derogatory term here at AnandTech. It is simply a matter of respect to our gay members.

Please confine your discussion to this thread. Any new threads will be deleted.

<<how come we let minorities make a big stink and rule the way the rest of us live our lives>>

There would be no need for "stink" if they were treated like any human likes to be treated, with respect.

I agree with the mods' decision. This board is for everyone, and people should be able to post here without fear of any deragatory labels.

I humbly request a list of every single word that might EVER be used derogatorily against any person and further request that said list be stictly adhered to at all times. If that sort of equallateral enforcement isn't put in place, then you should remove the "ban" on some words being used derogatorily. Doing otherwise shows personal preference to some groups over others and is itself a derogatory statement.

well you shouldnt be using 'egay' at all because its just like getting around thee language filter, people still know what you mean when you say it

it's just one of those laws/rules that arent enforced as much as others 🙂

Yeah I heard a saying once similar to this:

Why do the weakest have the most control of everybody elses lives.

You can use that sentance to compare just about anything these days.

gays have no choice over being gay?

and psycho's have no choice to be psycho
but they cause all sorts of trouble, take lives, etc.
there's a psycho for every few hundred thousand of us out there, and we should be glad theres no more
because it's not natural
they die out, just like any abnormal creature in nature.

Well guys, they're not screwing around. One of our Elites felt the hammer tonight. SuperSix said the word and is now "an example".

You know I'm almost hesitant to write much because I've written my thoughts 2x and both times they've just been deleted. One was a thread started by a mod too.

Anyway this is taking being PC too far. By similar token saying "owned" might offend those because of slavery connotations. How about all you people who said that the people who said "raped" where fine since the context was not refering to a woman being sexually violated, and that we should accept its other definations.

Gay as a negative term is a slang word these days just as much as suck doesn't mean fellatio. Anything you say will offend someone, its all but guarenteed. Everyone needs to toughen up a little more and realize not all things are directed at being hurtful to them or will hurty their dainty little ears.

<< we believe that a homosexual has no choice in their orientation >>

About half the board would disagree, but either way its irrelevant isn't it? It's not like I'm saying "thats homosexual" gay does not equal homosexual.

This policy is not cool. I hope I haven't offended those who have had hypothermia or frostbite by using "cool" to indicate positive emotions.

if gay is banned, i demand anti-polish, anti-male and anti-white posts are also banned.

Do you all see where i am going with this? You cant stop it, because then everything must be stopped.
