Greensboro, North Carolina (CNN) -- A federal jury in North Carolina acquitted former Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards on one count of violating campaign finance law Thursday and deadlocked on the five other counts against him.
Prosecutors had accused the onetime North Carolina senator of using nearly $1 million in contributions from two high-powered donors to keep his pregnant mistress under wraps as he ran for president a second time in 2008. After more than 50 hours of deliberations over nine days, jurors cleared him on one count, which involved allegations that Edwards had accepted illegal campaign contributions in 2008, and U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles declared a mistrial on the remainder.
On leaving the courthouse, Edwards told reporters that while he never believed he committed a crime, "I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong, and there is no one else responsible for my sins."

wow..guilty on 1 mistrail on others.

I told people back when he was running at pres that he was a slime ball. I'm pissed that others didn't see that, it was so obvious. This was before any of his horrendous personal behavior came out, he just reeked of it.

Politically, he wasn't - he was far better than any Repub and most Dems. As a husband...

Seems particularly well suited to buying reasonable doubt.

Ya, all that cash he handed the jurors was just wrong.

There is nothing suggesting his no-doubt excellent legal team did anything wrong - the issues in this case made a clear case for 'reasonable doubt'.

Save your rants about money for where they're deserved.

Simple revenge attempt by a Bush holdover attorney, that lost his bet.
So now the douche bag is running for office (Bush attorney douche bag, that is).
Republicans and sex.... What's it with them. He knew this was a long shot.
I guess just jealous they all get caught? (in the men's bathrooms stalls at the airport)

I'm not sure how a grown-up jury could decide anything but 'not guilty' regarding this topic given the laws seem to be written by a group of kids during nap time using the words touched by the spilt milk and cookies....
It is beyond vague, imo.

Wonder if the judge's bias against Edwards didn't tip the scale. Heard it was palpable.

I am just glad its over. I am sick and tired of all the news reporting

"Breaking news: A gray SUV was seen parked across the street from the court house today. Stay tuned for expert analysis on why gray and what this means for the case. And later we interview an eye witness who has walked past a gray SUV at a car dealership before to get first hand accounts. But now we go live to our reporter on the scene who has independent cell phone video taken of the gray SUV sitting there"

According to what I heard yesterday the government used some rather, ah, "creative" interpretation of the law to charge Edwards in the first place. I have hated John Edwards even before his slimy personal behavior was known (he was a truly despicable ambulance chaser before he entered politics) but the acquittal was probably fair. I hope that the DoJ doesn't waste time and money attempting to retry him on the charges where the jury didn't reach a verdict.

Takes one to know one? Slimeball he is but this was a weak case.

The prosecutor brought depended on the accused personal despicable behavior to actually sway a jury when the evidence wasn't indicative of a slam dunk conviction.

Very stupid.

Of course he was guilty.

He was guilty of being a fucking Liberal.

For that alone he should have got 50 years.

It seems all the major motions went to the prosecution... I'm sure there is a record of her reasoning. Bias would be grounds for a mistrial and to get that there'd have to be some evidence for that... My limited knowledge on the case doesn't see bias... but does see some rather dumb decisions by the judge.

It is the law regarding this that is the problem... The government had to present state of mind evidence but it couldn't so it presented some collateral state of mind evidence in the hope that the jury would link the two separate issues... 'Edwards is a cad who lies to his wife... therefore, he knew he was violating the law' type of stuff.

Did you read on the Senator Stevens case? That is government at work... IF they get big fish they get judgeships for life.
