Looks like Prop C passed today.

Here's what the ballot said:
PROPOSITION C
Proposed by the 95th
General Assembly
(Second Regular Session) SS SCS HCS House Bill 1764

Shall the Missouri Statutes be amended to:

Deny the government authority to penalize citizens for refusing to purchase
private health insurance or infringe upon the right to offer or accept direct
payment for lawful healthcare services?

Modify laws regarding the liquidation of certain domestic insurance
companies?

It is estimated this proposal will have no immediate costs or savings to state or local governmental entities. However, because of the uncertain interaction of the proposal with implementation of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, future costs to state governmental entities are unknown.

With 93% of precincts reporting, Prop C has 71% of the vote.

Missouri would have seceded from the Union, too, if Federal troops hadn't disbanded the legislature at gunpoint...

The relative merit and balance of power is about the same, then and now...

Our federal government is held together by force of violence? Not sure how else I was supposed to read that.

Um, bringing up the Confederacy (which has NOTHING to do with the issue at hand) just shows how ignorant liberals are.

I thinks he's saying the army the federal government maintains is more powerful than the army Missouri maintains, therefore the federal government has absolute authority over what the states do.

And Missouri employers can stop withholding federal taxes. Think of all the money they'll save.

That would be great - they'd need that money to cover the heath care costs of those sucking off of government mandated Medicaid/care...

The feds should let them do this. Federal mandate that insurers not discriminate based on pre-existing conditions without the individual mandate to buy coverage means insurers will either flee the state or go bankrupt when people wait till they are sick to buy coverage.

BTW, Missouri gets $1.30 for every $1 they pay in, so even if those leeches refuse to pay taxes, cutting them off from federal spending would be a net win for America's productive taxpayers.

I wouldn't say they're leeches but to offset the lack of federal funding they'd have to raise state and local taxes which would end up being higher than what they pay out to the Feds.

That's one way to go. Or they could cut spending.

Cut more than they already have too?

http://sunshinereview.org/index.php/Missouri_state_budget

The state of Missouri may be facing a $800 million shortfall by 2012, according to officials. Since the adoption of the FY 2010 budget more than $700 million has been cut from the total budget - $23.7 billion budget. However, even more cuts are anticipated for the future, as a result of no future federal stabilization funds.[1] Missouri is using $860 million form the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but these funds will be gone by 2012.[2]As of October 2009 approximately 2,300 full-time and part-time state positions were cut. Gov. Nixon decided against furloughs because the cost savings were not as great as eliminating positions.[3]

Missouri borrowed $150 million more from its cash reserves on October 9, 2009 bringing the total to $350 million borrowed since the start of FY 2010 on July 1, 2009 with $170 million remaining in the reserve fund. The FY 2010 budget was based on a 1 percent decline in revenue from FY 2009, but the state has seen a 10 percent decline since July 1 and a 16 percent drop for September 2009. FY 2009 saw an almost 7 percent drop from FY 2008.[4] According to state officials, state revenue fell 7 percent in fiscal year 2009 and in the first seven months of fiscal year 2010, revenues were 12.5 percent below predictions.[5]

... and the Federal government is estimated to be spending $1.71 per $1 taken in in 2010. Seems like Missouri's not doing too shabby.

Meaningless. Missouri cannot pass laws that overall the federal one, so they've basically just done nothing.

Damn, if I lived like that I'd be making MUCH different threads in the Garage forum than I have. I thought it was a bit higher, actually. the deficit seems really close to half the federal budget.

I dunno. Seems to be a lot of people getting high in California. Not that this is new, :awe: , but the legality of it is.

The state can exempt its residents from IRS tax codes? Awesome.

I agree, but this is one of about half dozen problems I had with the healthcare bill. You can not force people to buy something unless they want to. Obama compared the analogy to auto insurance which is a big lie. Because I only have to buy auto insurance if I am going to drive a car. If people don't want to go to the doctor then they shouldn't have to pay. They needed a better system, but that part of bill was solely for us to pay for insurance for other people. I truly believe major portions of the healthcare bill would be ruled unconstituional if challenged far enough to the supreme court.

Would you be supportive of sending the Feds into MO with guns, forcing the people to buy health insurance from a private company at gunpoint?

Well, McCain did win the state.

Not really. We're a pretty evenly split state. Even Columbia (historically liberal college town) went 59% for Prop C.

This will definitely lead to a day in court, but it's more about expressing disapproval for how healthcare is being handled and the intrusion on individual and states rights.
