Missing Printers In W2K

I have tried everything to solve this problem. When I open Ctrl Panel, Printers the only icon shown is Add Printer. I have three printers set up and I can see them in the Registry but not in the Printers folder. When I add a printer everything goes correctly but no printer is shown in the folder but it shows in the Registry. This means I can't start or stop spooling, see print jobs present, etc. In addition I can't print from Notepad, Wordpad, IE 5.5 but can print from MS Word and various other utilities that print. This behavior is the same for local and network printers.

MS had a Knowledge based article that mentioned duplicate dll's in the Winnt directory and Winnt\System32 directory might cause this and to rename the ones in the Winnt directory. I did but no luck. Incidentally when I try to print from Notepad or IE I get a "not enough memory for this operation" message. But the machine has 256mb memory and is a standard BX Master mb. Everything else on the machine works like a champ. Anybody else with problems like these or any suggestions?
