Missing my DVDROM and my 2 CDROMs from WinXP suddenly

Hie, I have a problem with my PC. Out of the blues, my DVDROM and my 2 CDROM just disappeared from Windows XP. In Device Manager, exclamation marks appear on all 3 devices. I tried rebooting; but the strangest thing happened! For the first time, during the Bios Bootup sequence, weird characters showed up instead of the normal roman/english letters like a webpage trying to read Japanese without Japanese language support.

I panicked so I rebooted a couple of times as the problem persisted as I thought it was a virus. Finally, it returned to normal. In the bootup sequence, the drives were recognized. But, when Windows started I noticed that my desktop resolution had changed and Sony monitor device was replaced with a 'Default Monitor', and my DVD/CD-ROM drives were showing error messages of 'Error 39'.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times but the problem persisted. I couldn't even restore to any earlier starting point.

I'm suspecting that my old GeForce 256 had something to do with it since its fan is no longer working. However, the fan's been dead for a couple of months now, and everything was running fine. The last thing I installed was my new Canon printer. But, that was 2 days ago, and everything was running fine.

I'd appreciate help from anyone to allow me get Windows XP to recognize my drives again. Thanks!

My specs:

500 Mhz Pentium 3
256 SDRAM
40GB Maxtor hard drive IDE
Silicon (generic) RAID ATA-133 card
Sound Blaster Audigy player
Intel network 100PRO/s network card

Missing from Windows XP but not in BIOS:
48x generic CD-ROM
48X x 12x x 48x Lite-On CD-RW
Toshiba 4X DVD-ROM

I've solved the problem! I got help from Microsoft's Support site - involves deleting 2 items in the registry.
