Missing HD DVD

I just have something to say that's been on my mind for a while . . .

I was an avid supporter of HD DVD and ended up losing quite a bit of money when I sold all my equipment and movies. I figured that when Warner Bros. moved, it would be over for HD DVD and I was right. As soon as I heard, I jumped ship and bought a PS3.

Now I watch Blu-Ray movies. But it isn't the same. I miss the navigation menu of my HD DVDs. Compared to Blu-Ray's, they were so easy to navigate through and were consistent. Now, every time I use a Blu-Ray navigation menu, I wish it was an HD DVD one.

What can you do? Right?
 
I always thought the PS3 had a smoother menu experience than my A35. The A35 makes the menus feel clunky and jittery. It doesn't seem very responsive and I can't find a way to show the "remaining" time on it when watching a movie.

The PS3 however is silky smooth and all I have to hit is SELECT to bring up a timeline.
 
With HD DVD, you can do everything with the directional pad and the select button. And you could always bring up the menu anywhere by just pressing up, or right (in early HD DVDs), and then put it away by pressing down, or right respectively. There always seemed to be a logical progression about it. And all HD DVDs have a standard interface.

I only own three BD, and they aren't early releases. On Dirty Dancing for instance, the directional pads don't bring up the menu. You have to press square. So, I would think that circle puts the menu away, but it isn't, it's square. Then you select an option; so now how do I go back. You press down. You can't access the menu at all during special features. In the other BD, you use the d-pad to select a menu item, but in Dirty Dancing you have to press the X button. Each menu looks substantially different, and appears in different areas; adding to the confusion.

As you can see, the HD DVD system is much more streamlined and easier to figure out. I never, with my 20+ movies, had to think of what I had to do to get to another section in the menu. But I'm always a little confused with BD and I only have three.

I didn't have a problem when I used the XBOX 360 pad. Is that PS3 controller supposed to magically change the way the interface works?

If it does, I'd probably get it, but I'd like to know more information that just a link.
 
I've never had a complaint about menus, at least... they feel like normal menus. I'm not looking for a world changing menu system that I can navigate with my mind alone. It's a freaking DVD... the movie is the seller. I'm not a critic of menu systems. I think some people just WANT to find little nuances to compare.

and FWIW, the PS3 BD Remote is awesome. Intuitive and easy to use. But lots of options too. Wish it had back-lit or glow buttons, but alas... you begin to memorize the layout and its easy once you do. Never used the controller so not sure if there is a drastic change... but since all the options are their own buttons, versus digging through menus after pressing select to find different things... it's a vast improvement.
 
Are you guys serious? Nobody complained about the menus on DVD and they were terrible most of the time. And what about VHS? It's just a menu get over it.

What functions get programmed to the PS3's X, O, [], /\ are set by the movie, they are not standardized. The remote then gives you the dedicated buttons for each function.
 
Terminator 2 Judgement day Navigation system pisses me off. Trying to select a scene is too annoying.
 
all the movie studios should pull a 180 right now and go to hd dvd with all the players like ~$100 and even less. watching movies on my 50" samsung, i thought chronicles of riddick looked better than most of my blu ray movies i have. oh well, i have the duo players so i'll buy the older HD movies on the cheap and newer blu ray movies. 😀
