Missing Files

So I put together a rig for someone else. As im installing windows xp (the same disk that has worked for a long time already) it gives me the error that it needs some file from the windows xp cd. In the directory it shows, it wants the file from D:/i386. The cd is already inserted so sll I can do is press cancel. It comes up with another error, the same one as before. I press cancel again. When the install finishes, the windows xp theme is not showing and the startup takes a little bit longer than usual. I try a windows repair this time and it gives me the same error at the same time as before. Is this a disk error? Is it a hard drive error? Can someone put me in the right direction? Thanks.

If this is your system, try to lower these clocks a bit and your system can get more stable.

When I have had a problem such as that, I browsed to the location and/or file that it was looking for on the CD, and it worked just fine. The only time that it didn't was when I got a corrupt disk in a set that I had just purchased brand new. I have no idea of why the files were not found automatically, but as long as they are found, that is what counts.

nope, not my system. So you are saying its because of the hdd heh? Ill give it a shot on my pc then....hopefully its not the hdd.

I've experienced this & seen this many times.

It's the RAM.
Either bad RAM, unstable overclocks, not enough vdimm, or bad RAM slots.

But it's extremely likely the issue is RAM.

Throw Memtest onto a CD/floppy & watch the errors crop up.

well turns out the pc decided not to detect the dvd burner in the middle of the install process. I hooked up a regular dvd drive and it worked. Mem test was fine for 2 passes.

I have had problems like that with my LiteOn Combo drive. On the burners, I haven't had that problem...so far.
