Missing 75Hz refresh rate!

I have this monitor.

On the Gateway web site, the specification reads "Pixel Resolution 1680 x 1050 (native) (75Hz)".

I have tried the monitor both with a 6800OC and a 7800GT. I only see a 60Hz refresh rate in the advanced display properties settings under the "Monitor" tab.

Why is that? How can I set it up to run at 75Hz? Why is the advertised 75Hz rate not available?

I don't know why, maybe your monitors inf file didn't contain the information for it. What I posted isn't a hack either, it's part of the nVidia driver features that you have to unlock.

1680x1050 isn't a official resolution for the standard nvidia drivers so it doesn't have the standard selection of resolutions (60, 70, 75, 85 etc.) that other "standard" resolutions have.

I don't need coolbits. I can see that tab already. But, when I change the refresh rate to 75 (under Advanced Timing), everything on screen look awful!

Hmmm...that's bad. Try 70 Hz. I calculated max for your screen from 1680x1050 resolution and horizontal sync and it was 73.28 Hz vertical. Use 70 Hz to be safe.

But, Gateway claims that this monitor runs at 75Hz at native resolution (1680x1059)!

Well, if you type in 75 Hz and it garbles the image, Gateway is wrong (false advertising). :( I'm not 100% sure of the equation (if 0.95 multiplier applies only to CRTs or not). Without it I think I got 76 Hz. But like I said, if it screws up the image you may be out of luck. You might try RMAing it since it is not performing within specification.

I can still take it back to Staples.

If you can afford it, the new NEC 20" widescreen is supposed to be really good, but it carries a very hefty price tag of $700.

Even this 21" wide-screen LCD that I have now is shorter (smaller vertically) than a regular 19" monitor. So, I think I am going to either stick with this or get another 21" wide screen.

I just sent an email to Gateway. I hope they explain.

Ok, just out of pure curiosity why do you care? This is an LCD display; there is no difference between 60Hz and 75Hz unless you are using Vsync in which case it raises the max framerate to stay in sync.

Just set it at 60Hz and leave it, its not a big deal!

I just hate misinformation. They clearly state it in the user's guide and on their web site. I am not sure if it makes any difference or not. It makes me wonder why they advertise it if it does not improve anything!

So, where do you draw the line? What if there was an LCD with a 5Hz refresh rate? Would you buy it? What is it that makes 60Hz enough and 5Hz not enough?

ROFL...

Misinformation happens; it's unacceptable in many cases.

But in this case, it simply doesn't matter.

Hey Navid,
As a FORMER owner of this monitor...former because it just gave me too many problems...I will tell you how to activate that 75 Hz w/o the coolbits or any other "hack".

Go into your nVidia Display Control Panel,
click on "screen resolutions and refresh rates",
clear the "hides modes this monitor can't support" box,
then press "add" under the "custom resolutions and refresh rates" section,
fill in all the necessary stuff at NATIVE RES (1680 X 1050) and change the refresh rate to 75, then PRESS ADD.

Now you should be able to see the 75Hz in the refresh rates drop down menu. BTW, I hope your drivers are at least 81.85 because thats what i was using. Dunno if that option is there for older drivers. ALSO, even if your refresh rate is set to 75 Hz, the monitor setting itself will display something weird like 59.7 Hz (use the buttons on the side of the monitor to see this). Apparently this is normal for everyone who has set this, we think the monitor is scaling the 75 Hz down to something it can accept....whether it truly runs at 75, well i dunno. That spec on their site seems to be false advertisement, but i dunno either. There was a considerable difference between 60 and 75 Hz for me and a few other owners though. Hope this answers your ?.

BTW, if you want to read more interesting stuff on this monitor from lots of owners, come here:

Just got a reply to my email from Gateway. That was fast!

They provided this link. It shows that at the native resolution, it only supports 60Hz.

omg, how retarded....i went to that exact page a couple months ago and I SWEAR it was listed at 75 Hz for 1680 x 1050...this was the main reason everyone at the hardforum page started fiddling with the res in the first place, because they saw that page. Of course, in your actual manual, it only shows native as 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz. They must have changed it once people such as yourself started emailing them about it :thumbsdown:

Still though this page is still listed as 75 Hz for native:

Edit: Just noticed you linked an entirely different page yourself in the OP...Gateway workers are a bunch of retards
