ahh but remember they didn't succeed at first in blowing up the world trade center either. not that i sympathize with these low lifes. my point is that they are persistent. they will keep trying until they succeed. the same can happen in the us.

Actually a Strella really isn't the best weapon to shoot down a 757 with. The placement and heat signature of the engines isn't ideal. It also looks like this attack was from the front, the SA-7 really needs to lock onto a hot engine exhaust to gain a high probability of a hit. Thier are very few shoulder launched surface to air missiles that will succesfully do a front aspect attack. Additionally, even if they had hit the aircraft with both missiles it is unlikely that they would down the aircraft immediately. Most likely they would just diable an engine or two in which case the aircraft should be able to make a go around, but you never know.

No, but I killed my friend in his Zero with a sniper rifle. He was trying to bomb my jeep, so I got out just to be stupid, and his plane had like 1 HP left, and the sniper rifle killed him.

SA-16, SA-18, Stinger series, Mistral? Also, if I recall correctly, the British Blowpipe is an optically guided missile, not IR. Plus, the replacement for the Blowpipe is the Javelin, which is RF guided. Another British SAM is the Starstreak, which uses laser beam riding for guidance -- also unaffected by older IR's front/rear aspect problems.

Nevertheless, as you mention, one of these missiles is UNLIKELY to take down an airliner, unless it ignited the fuel when it detonated.

Sorry, I should have said that very few shoulder fired missles that a terrorist is likely to have can do a front aspect attack although at least 1 Blowpipe missile was found in Afghanistan. By far the terrorists would be most likely to have an older Stinger or an SA-7 or one of the Chinese copies of an SA-7. The other weapons you mentioned would be far more difficult to get. I am pretty sure that only the newer model Stingers are any good at a front aspect attack particularly on an aircraft with commercial turbofan engines. Isn't the Javelin an anti-armor weapon system, even the new version? I wasn't aware of it being developed for IR anti aircraft use.
