Miss America contestant pursuing double mastectomy

Win or lose Saturday, Miss America contestant Allyn Rose will have conveyed a message about breast cancer prevention using her primary tool as a beauty queen: her body.

The 24-year-old Miss DC plans to undergo a double mastectomy after she struts in a bikini and flaunts her roller skating talent. She is removing both breasts as a preventive measure to reduce her chances of developing the disease that killed her mother, grandmother and great aunt.

We must spend more money on breast cancer research. The alternative is horrifying if this catches on.

Where is the logic in a move like this? Should we remove our hearts if we have a history of heart disease in the family?

She likely has a BRCA1 gene mutation, giving her about a 60% chance of developing breast cancer. Not only is onset of this variety typically at a young age (before 30), but it's also often triple negative, meaning that it is both very aggressive and won't respond well to most treatment.

Faced with such a prognosis, it's hard to blame her for wanting a prophylactic mastectomy.

Can't she just get checked more often and remove them if/when the cancer develops?

Man, I would never. Both of my parents have liver problems (Dad died of it) and no fucking way it is leaving my body until it absolutely has to and that's not even a part I really care about.

If you are that scared of death, I guess I can understand it, but I am not. If it happens, it happens and I will deal with it then. Up until that point I want to continue to look as awesome as I can.

Of course, she could just get giant replacement boobies, coudn't she?
I mean, there is no silicone shortage, is there?

On an awesome scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Trident and 10 being Alky, where would you rate yourself?

It's an option, but it means living in fear. By the time she'd detect a lump, it may have already spread to her lymph nodes, and by then a mastectomy would be far less effective. Christina Applegate went this direction, and managed to get away with it.

A friend of my wife did the same thing. They found cancer during the procedure.

She now has implants and looks like a completely normal woman.

Her mom had 1 breast removed at 27 due to cancer. She went to have the other removed at 47 just in case. After it was removed they found cancer but it had already spread.

Some cancer is very agressive and it runs in her family.
