Took the plunge yesterday to vista 64 despite warnings not to.
I got everything working absolutely perfect by about 9pm last night. I couldn't believe how fast my system was compared to Vista 32. Graphics smooth, fast, no popping out of my X-FI Platinum.
Then I decided to reinstall Ubuntu on my third hard drive. I know that X-Fi does not support Linux (heck, Creative barely supports windows) so I powered off and unplugged the card. Then I went to get some water as I powered on. When I sat down I knocked my PC with my knee and the power dropped. I did also smell a very very slight burning smell. I had no idea where it was coming from. I could not coax it back to life and gave up, angry, at midnight.
This morning I had a plan - swap out motherboards and CPUs. Well it's been two years since I messed with this and I ended up breaking a pin off my spare CPU so it went into the trash. Everything slowly went 1 by 1 onto the new motherboard. Everything works fantastic.
Until I realize that I don't have my CD Rom plugged in. I power off, and none of my little power connectors will reach the CD-Rom. so I re-juggle all the connectors. Nothing major, just rearranging mostly fan and 1 Sata power connector.
Now the new motherboard works exaclty like the first. Gives 4 LEDs on my DFI Board (as the first DFI) meaning it's stuck at CPU.
I swapped everything. Sound, video, Ram, power supply, and they're both stuck on 4 LEDs. So I'm guessing I have a sick CPU and have a replacement on the way.
None of this makes any sense, though. How did bumping my PC fry my CPU AND if it's a problem how did it run LoTRO in 1920x1280 for two hours this morning before dying?
None of this is logical to me.
--- From Newegg I now have a new Toledo CPU (939) as well as a new AM2 / DDR3 / DFI Lanparty mobo...
