Miserable in Promotion

2 months ago I was offerd a promotion at work, with the provision of if I wanted to I could go back to my old position if it didn't work out. the new position started off with 60 hour weeks, and working every weekend, and I was told it would get better but it really hasn't and is getting worse. my boss still hasn't rehired for my old posistion and currently an inept temp is in that spot. the problem stems from my bosses point of view I'm prolly doing an awsome job, but I'm miserable and dread showing up to work everyday. The pay is the only thing thats making me want to keep going, my pay stayed the same from my old position but is hourly, so I'm making some decent coin, and from what I find I'm pulling down more than people who have been working my position for 5+ years. I have been getting a feeling there going to move me to salery which will be pay cut to what i'm getting now. I'm basically at the point of telling him that I want to go back to my old position so I have time to go back to school.

what would you guys think if you were in my bosses position if someone who you promoted and from your point of view is doing a great job asked for his old job back?

they shouldn't give you the option to go back if they didn't want you to have the option to do so.

mo' money mo' problems as the saying goes. At some point you have to look and ask yourself if the miserable feeling is worth the extra money. What's the point of money if you're not happy? For me, money provides an extra way for me to be happy. But if I'm miserable making that money then I dont see a point in it. I would take my old job back if it were indeed if you described.

if they are moving you to salary, you can haggle the price to be the same as the pay + OT. i did that, as well as adding a week vaca to it. as for the haggard mess youre becoming doing the job, talk to your boss and tell him how youre doing, and ask him if there are any immediate plans to refill your old job. if not, then talk to him about the going back thing.if hes willing to let you go back, hes capable of understanding your talking to him isnt a flaw in your work performance.

With Obama as our leader, one year from now you'll be working a 40 hour week and making twice as much. Just stick in there.

Where can I sign up for this plan?

If I were your boss, and I were not a complete turd and cared about the welfare of my workers, I would ask you why you wanted to go back to your old position, and I would consider that a miserable worker might be more helpful in the short term but not in the long, and I would cut some sort of deal with you: Stay on for 3 more months, let me find somebody to stick in your current position, and in the meanwhile, you tell me when too much is too much, and I will attempt to reallocate some of your work.

I would also ask that you help train your replacement and that for the first few weeks of your replacement working, you pop in occasionally to see how he's doing. If he totally blows, you refer him to me, and then you don't have to worry about him.

...I suspect that many bosses aren't like this, though.

I don't think it would be entirely unreasonable. It sounds like they're not holding up their end of the bargain. You signed up under the expectation that your hours would be reduced eventually and that didn't happen.

You should, however, give them a chance to address the issues you have with the position. Is it just the long hours that bother you, or do you just really not like your new job duties?

How could your new position change to make it workable? For example, do they need to split off some of the work you're doing and give it to someone else?

Let me get this straight... you took a promotion with more responsibility, longer work hours and more stress for the same pay??

I kinda "WTF'd??" at that, too... especially when he said that the workload would be getting reduced.

Let's face it. They lied to you. And you can't go back. once you do you're chances of a promotion will be greatly reduced. And, as you're finding out, mo' money doesn't make everything OK.

I'd start looking for another job. What you're doing now should look great on a resume!

I'd be disappointed, but just give it to him/her.

If your boss offered you the oppurtunity to go back, he obviously he there was something shitty about it. Ask yourself if you really need that extra money you are getting now. If it sucks that bad and made a 'fun' job turn into crap, then ditch it. I'm at a shit job now and doing it purely for money while I look for something better. If it wasn't a temp position, I'd have left last week.

well an update because I totally forgot about this thread...LOL. didn't go to my boss yet... they finally hired 3rd shift help for my account which was what was causing the insane hours, since I basically had to work 2-3 hours after my shift to get my stuff to the point where the 1 guy on 3rd shift could handle things. More I think about it I can't really go back to my old position, my old position was basically an assistant to my current position and that would just be wierd working under someone who did my old job that I know how to do well. going to ride it out another month and see how it goes, and if they do screw me with my pay then i'll make an issue of it. to answer the question on pay at my old position I made an hourly wage working 40 hours a week with no OT, now I work 60 hours a week at that same rate. so its a decent amount of money. when I took the position I was told I would be getting a raise after 90days when I had my review, but then I started really looking at it and relised he prolly doesn't know what I am making atm. if my hours are able to go to what my shift is supposed to be I'll average 50 hours a week (9 hours a day + every other weekend) if thats the case i'll still be making more than the person who currently works opposit of my on first shift, and hes been with the company for 4 years or so ( I think I relise why empoylers don't like you knowing other coworkers salaries)

I made a decision to leave the blood sucking corporations a few years ago and my pay took a 50% hit. Best decision I ever made.

I would let him go back to the old position but I'd think twice before offering him a promotion in the future.

which is kind of what i'm afraid of. the position i'm working isn't really the problem its the account. I really wonder what my boss was thinking when he put me in this spot, a person who 1 year ago had no experience in the industry being put into the frying pan on a new multi million dollar account with a workload people that have been with the company for 5+ years don't have to deal with. I guess I can see that as a compliment to myself but really that had to take some balls on his part.

the suck part of the deal is 90% of our buisness is from GM so I prolly won't have to worry about it much more since i'll be out of work

^^^^ Somehow reminds me of the old line:

"There's a promotion in my pants, see if you can find it."
