Mirage Omnisat Speakers Clearance $79.95 ea Shipped at Vanns.com

I have an energy sub... i can only imagine the mirage sub is nicer

i paid 500 for my energy S10.2 sub, which is very similar to the mirage.

I need to pick up some surrounds for my aunt, and I'm wonder if these mirage omnisats would do a good job. Does anyone have experience with them?
 
I bought 5 of these, and they are wonderful.
It'll take you a little while to get adjusted to their radiating sound ... but then you'll begin to enjoy it. Perfect for movies! And at their price, its a quite a deal. grab them while they last.
I've 3 of the platinum black and 2 of the whites.

Well these speaks should be VERY immersing. Diffuse sound for HT is great for creating atmosphere. For 80 a pop I bet you cant do much better.

Doesn't hurt that they look good (and I'm fairly confident have pretty good build quality). Not to mention the strange design is sure to get people to notice and/or talk about them.

Also of note is that they have all black for the same price if it matches better for ya.
 
I actually bought a set of 5 of these speakers from Vanns for 79.95 before Xmas 2006, but ended up cancelling them because I listened to the V2 version in Bestbuy Magnolia HT and did not like them for Music. There is no highs from these speakers when I was listening to them at BB, at least compared to any of the bookshelf speakers, even the $199 a set Klipsch. They would probably be nice for Home Theater, but I decided against spending $400 on a set of speakers that only exiled in one area of common usage.

But sound is a very subjective thing, so some people probably love them. At $80 a pop they are definitely good deal, they are suppose to be $250 speakers, and the V2 isn't much different from these according to various reviews. I suggest you give the V2 version a try at BB Magnolia HT center before buying them.

I mean they're small at the same time. Most speakers are significantly larger than this and don't have the WAF.

Is there a below $200 sub that would work well with these? I moved my speakers to the htpc and am looking to put a decent 2.1 setup in their place.

It's a pretty small area, maybe 20'x15'

Diffused sound is great for surrounds and rear, but why would you want it for fronts? You want localized sound coming from your fronts, and particularly your center.

I have heard of many people using 5 identical speakers in a surround setup, but they were always 5 front firing (not everyone likes diffused surrounds). I have never heard of 5 diffused speakers. you *want* localized fronts, to create the Right-Center-Left effect of passing across the screen, and you most definitely want the voices anchored to the front on a center channel.

All that being said, it looks like everyone who bought these are happy with them. I'm just interested in the philosophical discussion here about localized vs. diffused sound.

After listening to the OmniState V2's at BB...I agree with you 100%. They create a huge sound stage for music/movies, but the vocals are too diffused and don't quite have the "punch" vocals demand. I would say they make GREAT surrounds though.

I think thats why Mirage's higher end models feature a mixture of the two. I think a lot of the people who use 5 of these just use them for homogenity (they do have a specifically designed center channel after all) and cost. I doubt the vast majority of people who buy surround sound even put a whole lot of effort into placing them correctly let alone take stuff like that into account. With these I think people are just wanting to blanket everything in sound (which isn't necessarily how it should be).

Ideally I think you would have a mixture of the two (possibly two sets of speakers so that you don't have to utilize the diffusion of these if you're wanting the localized sound say for video games). I notice Mirage sells ceiling mounted versions with the tech in these speakers, which I think would be great for them (say if you had quite a bit of money you could place them all over for parties (out of the way but would get the music to fill the room).

- Because the room and/or the furniture isn't laid out in a conventional way for HT, maybe because it isn't set up primarily for HT. So you can't get the sweet spot where you want it.
- Because some of your listening areas would be outside the sweet spot with more directional speakers.
- You prefer not to be as aware of the speakers, ie more immersive experience.
