Minutes to Midnight

there were so many interviews in which the band said it is completely different musically and not rap-rock anymore.

i didnt listen to much, but flipped thru the songs and it sounds like the same stuff from 5 years ago.

I used to like Linkin Park, then they went downhill. I like the stuff they did with JayZ, which is a surprise since I neither like Rap nor Linkin Park (anymore).

I've listened to it three times now and it gets better each time. I like probably 2/3's of the tracks.

My opinion after a single listen:

1 - 'Wake' is a decent intro. Sounds like something Mogwai would do.
2- 'Given Up' is dull & boring. Shinoda's rap sounds a lot like 'In the End'. Puddle of Mudd does songs like these much better.
3 - 'Leave Out All the Rest' sounds like it might catch on after a few repeat listens.
4 - 'Bleed it Out' returns to the rap/rock formula and has potential to catch on. Look forward to it being used for a montage in an upcoming Hollywood high-school movie about rival gangs.
5 - 'Shadow of the Day' sounds too much like a U2 song. When the guitar kicks in around 3:00, you can almost swear The Edge was playing.
6 - 'What I've Done' has no redeeming value. Wouldn't care to listen to it again.
7 - 'Hands Held High' is a politically charged anti-war rant by Mike Shinoda, set to a funeral-march-like church organ. One of the better songs on the album.
8 - 'No More Sorrow' - Some shredding. Some yelling. Some pretty mediocre stuff.
9 - 'Valentine's Day' - Holy crap. Their angst has now moved on from fighting personal demons (Crawling), the loss of Love & Trust (In The End), becoming indifferent to an abusive someone (Numb) to ' being alone on a Valentine's Day'.
10- 'In Between' - Low-key harmonic vocals by Mike Shinoda. Marked for repeat listening.
11 - 'In Pieces' - Yet Another Mediocre Song.
12 - 'The Little Things Give You Away' - Probably one of the stronger songs on the record - again sounds like a U2 song. The melody sticks with you after just a single listen. Definitely a good track to end this mediocre album with.

Tracks I like/might like after more spins: 3,4,5,7,10,12
Best Song: The Little Things Give You Away

Overall Rating: I give it....2/5.

It's a good thing they are giving up on the whole nu-metal sound - but this new sound they picked up isn't going to cut it either.

P.S. I liked Hybrid Theory, Meteora and I LOVE Collision Course with Jay-Z.

Ugh, just listened to it again; I still hate it.

1. Wake - Completely pointless if you ask me, "Foreword" on Meteora was better 😛
2. Given Up - Verses are short and forced and the lyrics suck, ooh, LP is geared toward an older audience now because they said "f*ck". Plus, that clapping in the background is SO annoying, sounds like fapping.
3. Leave Out All the Rest - Annoying, sounds like they're trying to be a different band and failing miserably. Chorus almost seems off-key.
4. Bleed It Out - Sounds like it should be a b-side off Hybrid Theory, which IMO, is a good thing for this train wreck of an album. Convinced it's a pretty good song after seeing it performed live on SNL.
5. Shadow of the Day - Same as track 3 if you ask me.
6. What I've Done - One of the better songs on the album, the lyrics make less sense than I'd expect for one of the best songs on the album. All the songs on Hybrid Theory and Meteora were formulaic, but at least they were good at it.
7. Hands Held High - Eh.
8. No More Sorrow - WTF, are they trying to be AFI now? Go listen to Miss Murder and tell me it's not the same song.
9. Valentines Day - Mediocre, the lyrics suck though.
10. In Between - Jesus, Mike, stick to rapping.
11. In Pieces - Would EASILY be the best track on the album if it had some more rhythm to it! On the first listen I kept expecting Brad to kick in full swing with a solo or something.
12. The Little Things You Give Away - Seems like Linkin Park wants a "Knights of Cydonia" of their own, blah.

The album as a whole lacks rhythm, and whatever new style it is they're going for, they should at least make up their mind on how they want to approach it. Overall grade, 2/5.

I like that the album is only $8.99 at circuit city, and you can buy an enhanced version that contains extra content as well as pre-encoded MP3s.

Encoding MP3s is as easy as clicking "rip" in EAC, but if the album was at least 50% good tracks, I'd get the enhanced version for the 5.1 track it has.

Anyone else notice that bands that radically alter their hairstyle and suddenly decide to grow facial hair are putting out really crappy albums for 06 and 07? The Killers come to mind instantly.

Oh, I know it's easy to encode an MP3. I just like that they're specifically supporting it.

Ah; LP was never really anal about that kind of thing, especially for concerts

Were you guys Linkin Park fans to begin with?

Big time; album was a huge disappointment.

Same here, I am, I mean, WAS, a huge LP fan until this album. It freaking sucks to hell.

Linkin Park was the other, of only two groups I ever bought actual CDs for...not this time. (Other band is the Cranberries.) I can't imagine anyone, but the most diehard LP fans will like this one. I thought I was a diehard fan, but I guess not. 🙁

I really did like the old stuff. And Hybrid Theory and Meteora was awesome. Collision Course was also great!

this new stuff seems like a 5 year old wrote the lyrics especially given up.
