minty is the opposite of spicey

Do they measure mints in negative scovilles?

not sure, i've never tasted anything that i thought was just "too minty"
wait, actually, altoids are pretty strong... hmm...

anyway, there are 4 main tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, and sour (5, if you count umami, the taste from meat & cheese.). we all know that spicey (hot) isn't a normal taste, it's just a kind of burning (comes from capsaicin) measured in scovilles, as aves2k brought up. neither is minty. but if spicey makes your mouth hot, and minty makes your mouth cool, it kinda makes sense then. kinda. 😉

no, the opposite of spicy is bland. Mint is a type of spice, just not very hot (still *strong*). "Spice" measures strong flavor, not heat.

i know that spice doesn't always refer to heat, but spicy usually does. but i still hold to my theory: if the opposite of heat is cold, then the opposite of "spicy" (hot) is minty. and the opposite of just spicy would be bland.

makes sense i guess.. all i know is that sweet and sour are opposites.

Wouldn't sour be the opposite of spice since sourness is caused by acids and spicyness by capsaicinoids which are alkaline?

Bland isn't the opposite of spicy, it's like saying 0 is the opposite of 10.
