minor rant: Google Maps

Just plotted a route... the map picture shows the line for the route, (across the center of the USA), but the actual map images haven't loaded yet...

WTF?!! It seems the outlying images are loading first. (So that when I slide the map to the left or right, I can see off the edge of the current map.) If I slide the map left or right, I can see the atlantic ocean... Oh hey! There's Bermuda... WTF does Bermuda have to do with I-70? I want to go from f'in NY to f'in Oklahoma. Those f'in islands in the middle of the f'in ocean have nothing to do with the f'in highway I'm going to be driving on. Why doesn't the center of the map load first?!! Central America? Why is that there?! Are those images there, just in case I get a little lost?

Note: I'm on dial-up... I simply hit "enter" to get my directions, and put the page in the background for 5 minutes.. When I returned for my directions, I discovered that all the blocks outside the area I was interested in had loaded, but the center of the map hadn't yet.

Stop zooming in/out and scrolling around, k.

Read the 2nd paragraph...
I hit <enter> and minimized the page for 5 minutes. 5 minutes later, the perimeter of the map was loaded, but not the center of the map. There was no activitity on my part in regard to that page. Nearly 10 minutes for the whole map to load, with one block in the center being the last block to load.

it's not google's fault you havent stepped into the 21st century.

Not all of the world is wired for broadband yet...
My only alternative is directway; and that's not really much of an alternative, as they cap your bandwidth per day, and really aren't that fast compared to cable or DSL. (Although, it costs 3 times as much or more)

And, with your logic, you'd make the perfect programmer for Microsoft or any of the other companies with bloated software: "No need to make it efficient, computers are so fast anyway" logic leads to poor coding. (Change Microsoft to the team who makes adobe acrobat... You need a cutting edge hardware to open some documents and especially to print some documents in a reasonable amount of time)

😕

You can't magically make images smaller or an Internet connection magically faster. It's nothing to do with efficiency, the images are the size they are and ergo, take xyz time to load on a slow connection.

No crap, if they don't cater to my 9600 baud modem soon I'm gonna boycott. By the way, it took me 56 minutes to download this page and another 34 minutes to post my comment.

I was on dialup for a while and I found that the Googlemaps tiles rarely ever loaded completely for me. I just ended up using the other map services.

I think some of you aren't getting it... Maybe you just don't use google maps. With google maps, you can click and drag the map and see what's off your screen. Rather than one map, it loads a lot of individual pieces. My gripe is that they're sending me the piece for Brazil, which isn't even close to the route I had them plot, before they send me the pieces for my actual route.

Here's an analogy to their programming. Suppose I wanted a copy of the January 12th New York Times, and I ordered it. It would be like the New York Times sent me the Jan 5,6,7,8, 15,16,17,18th BEFORE they ever sent the Jan 12th, just in case I might want to look at the adjacent days... That's a pretty crappy algorithm, if you ask me...

What is dial up?

🙂

It is the second half of 2006 and there are still places in the US that don't have access to broadband?!?!?!? :Q😕 I've had broadband for over 5 years now and I was pissed that it took so long for my city to offer it.

I'm on dialup as well... there are plenty of other mapping services out there. Use an alternate.

I would assume that Google has *some* reason for loading it that way... but I don't much care.

Move out of Allegany County? Whats the per capita income there? $11,000? Why would they bring broadband to an area where people can't even afford cable TV.

Better move to where you can get broadband. Get MS Streets and Trips or something so you don't have to use the internet for maps.

When I go to print a point-to-point Google map, the route is offset in two directions. By that I mean it doesn't line up with the streets of the actual route. By a long shot.

It's so far off as to make it useless.

Hi, I don't know about the google thing, but you might check into www.wildblue.com They also have sat. internet. I don't know if they throttle or not, but I don't think they do.

Yeah, IIRC, they also have caps on their internet access.

I browse google maps just fine on my cell phone, which gets pretty crummy speeds, but then again I am using a google maps cell phone program and not the maps.google.com
