Minnesota Timberwolves are too white

1:04PM EDT October 29. 2012 - Is it possible in 2012 to have a team that is too white or too black?

That question is being asked in Minnesota where the Timberwolves will have five black players on its 15-man roster.

"How did we get a roster that resembles the 1955 Lakers?" Tyrone Terrell, chairman of St. Paul's African American leadership council asked Jerry Zgoda and Dennis Brackin of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "I think everything is a strategy. Nothing happens by happenstance."

Last season, African-Americans took 78% of the roster spots. So are the Timberwolves pandering to a fan-based that is white?

yeah they're too white. Must be some sort of conspiracy to pull in more white fans.

This is absolutely ridiculous. how about I claim that the NBA is racist and employs too many blacks?

I thought it was just a ploy to get the first pick next year. Field a team full of whiteys who will lose a lot and up your lottery chances.

Tyrone Tyrell, doing his part to keep racism alive and well in MN. Way to be a chairman of a 'leadership council' asshole. If there is any business that is color blind, it is professional sports. And of all the professional sports, the NBA is at the top.

I would like to ask him what he thinks the appropriate amount of non-black players are on an NBA roster.

If we imposed proportionality quotas on the NBA, the team would have to increase that to 11 white players out of 15. Where are our equality advocates?

33% is more than 6x the actual percentage of black people in MN. If anything, they're already overrepresented.

Surprisingly this team might be decent. The timberwolves spent the latter half of the 2000s trying for that much coveted first pick lottery. They seemed to always get 3rd. I think one year they only won like 11 or 12 games lmao.

Not following sports, I thought this was about color variation in wolf populations in MN.

Go figure.

Never mind that the Wolves are one of the more culturally diverse teams in the league.

1 Spainiard
2 Russians
1 Yugoslavian
1 Puerto Rican

Could you imagine the uproar if there was a news article with white people complaining a team was too black?

Sadly, even though you would have more of a case for that.

Of course the irony is that the best way to gain fans for your team is to win. Which requires having the best players possible regardless of race.

There's not enough hispanic/latinos playing Basketball or Football. We need fewer black people and more of the rest of us. If there was ever a time for affirmative action this is it!

A stupid comment for sure. These same guys didn't and wouldn't complain about a team being mostly black or latino.

I don't remember hearing any complaints about the nearly all latino Mets team.

This thread made me think how much has changed over the years. I can still recall hearing sports broadcasters saying "he is a real credit to his race" after a black player made a great play or whatever.

I just watched the segment on ESPN's First Take w/ Stephen A and Skip Bayless where they discussed this. Neither of them came down on the TWolves for their roster, and Stephen A even said he wouldn't have a problem if the team intentionally made a white roster for marketing reasons. They both agreed the team did not, he was just saying.

Who cares about the TimberWolves... They are not a good team!

That comment reminded me of how people claimed Jeremy Lin was a credit to his race because he was an Asian that was "Good" at Basketball. The Linsanity stopped right after Lebron and Wade put it in his butt....never heard about the kid again.

That doesn't mean a lot coming from someone who lives in Michigan.

How about those Pistons? lol

Or are you a bandwagon fan that jumps onto another team because they're playing well?

I am not a Pistons fan!

Besides, they don't suck as hard as Minnesota :p

Timberwolves are a playoff team IMO. Rubio with Barea as his backup is solid for the PG position. Pekovic is a sleeper that I promise every GM in the league is well aware of and they would sign him in a second. Kevin Love is the premier power forward in the NBA. Dirk and KG got old.:(

IIRC, he got a fat three years contract with the Rockets plus several endorsements (Nike, Volvo, etc.) in the US plus several more in Taiwan/China.

Even if he could not play another game in his life, he will be set for life and with a Ivy League degree, he won't blow all his money within a year or two, and you won't see his name in another Sports Illustrated article of "Where is my daddy".
