Mining cards starting to hit the used market

Yup in my local classifieds there's a handful of mid-high end AMD cards, I wouldn't buy a used AMD card right now because most of the time they've been abused to death with mining.

As long as a card comes with warranty or is priced right I don't see what the problem is to be honest. This broad brush that says they are abused by mining is silly.

People buy used K series cpu's all the time and they don't seem to complain. Granted there are more parts to a gpu than a cpu, but if a card works when you receive it odds are that it will work for a decent amount of time.

the problem is once some one registered the card to get the extended 3 years warranty, that warranty is no longer transferable. Only the one year.

and I am willing to bet that miners who bought their cards registered them immediately. I would if I buy hardware with the sole purpose of making money off it.

You have no conception of what a R9 290X can do in crossfire.

I run a QNIX 1440 PLS at 120Hz display - Wish I had 2 more of them.

Does anyone have any actual data or evidence beyond pure speculation that mining cards on average are in worse condition than cards used for gaming for the same period of time?

It seems to me for every knucklehead that overvolts the crap out of a card for mining there are 2 guys who undervolt it @ stock clocks for increased khash/watt efficiency. Can't say I see many gamers undervolting their GPUs

As long as the card wasn't improperly overclocked or run in a poor environment, mining is actually better for the card than your typical gaming usage. Silicon ages/wears by repeated heated/cooling cycles (such as idling on desktop -> gaming -> idling -> shutting down, etc.).

You have 2 7970's both going for $300 on ebay. One has been run at load 24x7 mining, the other was used in a gaming PC. You're going to bid on the one used for mining? I find that very hard to believe.

With what an under clocked Miner RIG.

Ask the seller to provide you with the original Bill of Sale if you run into a RMA.

I think it's just people using the dip as an excuse to upgrade and wait for the next wave. Sure, some of the casual miners are probably bailing out but most who were in it for the longer haul are just shifting to better cards at cheaper prices now.

Interesting point that it's possible a miner would take better care of his video card than a gamer, because the miner 1) loses profit for broken cards, and 2) has a financial incentive to undervolt and thereby "baby" the card (unlike a gamer who would go balls-out to get the highest possible overclock).

Running a card 24-hours a day won't wear out the card (especially if the card is undervolted), but would add more wear to the fan. From what I've read, you can re-lube the fans or even spend like $9 to buy a new replacement fan. But if the card is undervolted, the fan would spin slower and so maybe wouldn't reach the threshold of needing to be relubed (if the fan was spun at a low enough speed). But I think some fans like the MSI Twin Frozr would actually leak out their lube if you spun them at like 100% for days in a row, so you need to squirt some lube in there to prevent them from getting noisy.

Yes, or just use the squeeky fan as an excuse to do water cooling.

I have one of these and a TriX currently.

The DD is a nice card as long as you use a custom fan profile and your case has very good airflow. The VRM1 temps are the only downside I see....Good news is it's very quiet and even 100% isn't what I consider loud.

TriX makes DD sound silent.

Been using my cards for mining LTC....Last day for me is today.

The DD is my lucky card I guess as it's found 2 blocks vs 0 for the TriX while mining at wemineltc.com

Looking at his asking prices I can see why. $450-$460 Canadian each for 280x's.

I could sell both of my 290's for what he wants for one of his cards and still walk away with a profit.

Looking at your sig I wouldn't think you'd have issues. Triple spacing on MB makes me think so anyways. Your case looks like it would have adequate airflow....Unless your a noise freak.

I am sure 850w would be adequate but even when I had crossfire 7970s the fan on my PSU sounded like it would take off. I could only imagine what the load of 2x 290x what my PSU would sound like. I don't think I need more horsepower at this time since 1x 290x drives 1440p just fine.. and I am very sensitive to microstutter.

Seriously many gaming cards are overclocked to the hilt, many mining cards are undervolted and carefully temperature controlled. At worst it's probably a wash and it all depends on the luck of the draw but saying all mining cards are worse is probably crap and most likely pulled from thin air
