I think we should raise it too. Because it is impossible to obtain skills, go to college and make yourself better at any point in one's life!

I can understand how $5 is good in some areas where industry doesn't exist, but where I live, you better make $10+/hr or you are in DEEP TROUBLE! Might even be time to give minimum wage to states. But as it is now, it simply does not work.

Bush's argument. I supported a higher minimum wage.

Where is it???????

Republicans support an increase in min wage, they do NOT support jacking it up to $7 an hour which would cause inflation, higher unemployment, and a recession. Why hasnt there been an increase? Both sides locked horns and wouldnt compromise.

Thats why you can make $9 flipping burgers in some places. Or $15 as a cashier in others.

Minimum wage is a touchy subject because it's real effects are completely unrelated to its intended effects.

But no mainstream politician can get away with SAYING they don't want a higher minimum wage, because most of the population didn't pay attention in economics class (well, to be fair, most of the population didn't take an economics class).

A carton of milk will be $20. How does that cure poverty?

We're nearly a third of the way there now.
If you're paying >$6 for a gallon of milk, you're getting ripped off. I pay less than $3 (can't recall how much last time exactly, but it's a fary cry from 6-7$).

ACtually, it IS the answer.

Minimum wage is a market force that has a great deal to do with how many jobs are available. You wanna have to hire a high school kid with no skills and no experience for 7 bills per hour? Plus, youhave to move everyone else in the workforce up a notch, not pleasing to most businesses.

It's not as simple as it seems.

Why let facts get in the way of a perfectly good conspiracy theory?

Republicans have offered bills to raise min wage to $6.15 but they also contained measures to prevent inflation and job losses/freezes.

Minimum wage just level sets base income of 0 at whatever the minimum wage is by pushing inflation upwards. Nothing against it, I just know it's true value.

Hehehehehee,

All other things being equal...
The minimum wage increases the National Debt... by increasing the cost to the employer and reducing the taxable income... and thereby the tax revenues...

Of course they play leap frog with prices and all that inflation stuff so at the end of the day no one is better off... and it all balances out...

The only way to help the lower wage earner is to keep the wages paid and the price of what they (we) consume constant and affordable... which is the demand side consideration... If you increase your price then increase my wage and if you increase my wage increase your price.... nutty game this!!!!

states do have minimum wage. For example, here in California, its above $7. No wonder businesses are leaving and we have a large deficit.

14$ an hour here is scraping by.
I don't mind if I choose a lower paying job but things like
the company I work for uses excuses about being a corparation from out of state (texas)
so they don't have to pay San Francisco living wages like everyone else does is lame-0
If you live somewhere boring and sucky then yes 5 something an hour is OK (I really don't see how that could be true though in 2004)
But if you live somewhere people WANT to move to and things are more expensive this is NOT ok.
If you want to do buisness in The City you gotta pay like we all do.
M.Wage is a city by city issue.
You live somewhere spread out and suburban (most American cities) you should get paid fairly (noone wants to live there so less pay and rents and cost of living is less)
You live in the city you NEED that money -thats just the way cities are.

They don't have to do anything. They can offer their crappy wages and if no one wants to take it, they'll go out of business...

Yeah, you would think they would but being a TX company they collect tons of welfare bailout corprate projects.
People are talkign about unionizing but corprate threatens firing everyone and moving totally out of CA if we tried it.
Needless to say when I find a new job I shall be gone but this is all I can find right now that is STEADY and not temp work.

When corprate in TX ruled about us not getting paid SF minumum living wage when all the other big retailers did here ALL our management walked out.
I do not have this choice at the moment.
Someone with the same technician job at best buy almost makes twice what we do becasue we actually got memos about Bush's tax cut negating our need for raises based upon our residence and store location.
Typical Bush....
