You people all have me worried when I go looking for another job.

I have no college and I'm working as a sys admin / developer making $75k tax free working on a government contract. My only experience is 5 years in telecom in the Army and this job (2 years). I got this job because of my clearance level.

I'm starting to get anxious to get back to the US, but I don't know what to realistically expect...

D

Is that contract ending anytime soon? If its not, I would suggest staying on it as long as you can....

I agree... it could be 2 years or so before this country is once again back on its feet economically...

Well, the mission is starting to unravel a bit but I'm 99% sure the IT portion of the contract is intact at least until the end of FY 2006. I have every intention of staying with it (especially when my wife works on the contract with me so it = $$ * 2 🙂 ) but we're isolated and sometimes it really gets on our nerves...

My wife has a degree (political science) plus she's an MCSA + Exchange 2003. I'm studying up for the MCAD because I really enjoy the development aspect of the job. Our clearances are up for renewel in 2005 so we both know the best thing is to stay put, get the TS clearances renewed, and bank the $$$. Sometimes I really wish I could go to Outback (Queensland Chicken and Shrimp...mmmmm) or get in my truck and just drive somewhere for the weekend....sigh. I've really learned to appreciate the things that people back in the states take for granted.

To top it off, I've got my GI bill just waiting to be used and I've always wanted that little piece of paper...what do you guys think of on-line schooling? Is an on-line degree as useful and respected as a "real" degree?

NO... online degrees are not the same as a real degree. Where are you currently? There are always local schools you could attend. I know in Korea, University of Maryland even has a small branch on base for those stationed there. I believe people working on govt contracts can take advantage of those opportunities as well.

We do have access to a few schools here (I can't remember which ones exactly) but they only offer the basic courses, i.e. english, math, basic computers, etc. I suppose if they're accredited I could get the basic classes out of the way and finish my degree when I get done here.

My general rule of thumb of salary requirements:
ivy league:50k (well gotta pay back the loan some how)
2nd tier: 40k
3rd tier: 35k
ITT/Devry/U of Phoenix 30k

Add 25 percent if you live in Cali, subtract 25 percent if you live in Alabama, or any other hick states.

AZ, majored in Supply Chain Management. Wanted $35K, got $42K.

Five years later, and I'm making $6K more than I started at. 🙁
