And the point of that was....?

It's ok to not be a fan of guns, but some people are amazed that we've developed a machine that will fire 8000 rounds per minute (over 100 rounds per second).

It's even more amazing when you see it at night with tracers. They only put tracers in every few rounds with regular bullets in between, but the result is still a solid line of light.

Dumb question - what is that stream of stuff flying out of the gun besides the shells? I see all of the shells coming out but then there is a second stream of something else coming out. What is it?

The links from the belt. The belt if fed into a delinker which seperates the belt from the ammo, ejects the belt links and chambers the ammo.

Do regular machine guns use belts and delinkers? I thought the ammo was on a belt but when watching videos I don't remember it having that second stream of links flying out while the weapon is being fired.

Depends on the machinegun. Most use belts, some use mags. Generally any larger dedicated machiengun uses belts whereas full auto rifles use mags although there are some conversions available to turn a mag fed rifle into a belt fed machinegun, but they are few and far between.

Note that the M249 accepts both belt-fed ammunition (links) and a M16-style magazine.

Ever see the scene in Black Hawk Down when the little helicopters come in with the miniguns? They had plenty to shoot. 😉

The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys

They shot up 5 months worth of my mortgage payments in ammo!

I nominate that first video for the most boring chaingun video ever award. At least blow up and old car or something.

sweet! What did they shoot that exploded?

Tannerite. You can make a homebrew version of it using ammonium nitrate fertilizer and aluminum powder. Very easy to do, legal as long as you adhere to the laws regarding explosives.

I still wouldn't do it if I was middle-eastern looking though.
