so my dad wants to get a minidv camcorder, and a digital slr.

on the mini dv front, i have no clue what to get. dad's interested in the canon optura 500 and optura 300mc. anything else you guys would reccommend around the $1000 price point?

so for digital slrs, i think we're pretty settled on the d70, any of you guys have experiences with it? especially compared to the canon equiv (eos 300d)

the canon's i've heard suffer a lot from low light. I have the panasonic GS120 and am pretty happy with it... but then again, it was probably more than we needed :p

The d70 vs the 300d... and the battle continues. The 300D wins on price, hands down. the kit lens on teh d70.. is better. the d70 is faster, so if you want to take action shots, this would be a better move. But for the price.. i think i'd rather get a 10D... then again, i'm canon biased.

either way, you can't go wrong I don't think.

Check out the panasonics with 3ccd technology. The Panasonic PVGS120 is a great camcorder for around 700.

Second on the 10D. Better flash control than the Rebel, magnesium body, and a better damped pentamirror then the Rebel's pentaprism make for a superior camera, especially if you're willing to drop D70 money. Add a EF 28-135mm IS lens and you're golden.
