So my wife works for a small college and has recently applied for a job at a larger university....the new job would be technically a lateral move or even step down in title, but would would offer a salary almost 2x's what she is making now.
She received some additional materials to complete and then didn't hear anything for a while so she calls up the organization and they tell her that her references were 'weak'. Resume and essay replies were excellent. She was eliminated from the running purely on the references from her immediate supervisor, and her department supervisor.
This was difficult to understand because 1) she has had very positive reviews with the most recent being only 2 months ago and 2) she was just given a raise DOUBLE of the average raise last year, and received a raise well above the average for the previous year.
She calls her immediate supervisor and expressed her concerns 1) what negative was said so she can fix it 2) why did negative things come up in the reference check that didn't hear about in her reviews. Her boss was very concerned abuot this and said she would make some calls first thing in the morning.... though it may not help fix the damage done.
Personally, I think my wife is getting screwed over by the department supervisor just so she can keep my wife on staff. There is no doubt in my mind that my wife is qualified for this job. Its possible she is over qualified, but I doubt that as well.
