mini-rant

So my wife works for a small college and has recently applied for a job at a larger university....the new job would be technically a lateral move or even step down in title, but would would offer a salary almost 2x's what she is making now.

She received some additional materials to complete and then didn't hear anything for a while so she calls up the organization and they tell her that her references were 'weak'. Resume and essay replies were excellent. She was eliminated from the running purely on the references from her immediate supervisor, and her department supervisor.

This was difficult to understand because 1) she has had very positive reviews with the most recent being only 2 months ago and 2) she was just given a raise DOUBLE of the average raise last year, and received a raise well above the average for the previous year.

She calls her immediate supervisor and expressed her concerns 1) what negative was said so she can fix it 2) why did negative things come up in the reference check that didn't hear about in her reviews. Her boss was very concerned abuot this and said she would make some calls first thing in the morning.... though it may not help fix the damage done.

Personally, I think my wife is getting screwed over by the department supervisor just so she can keep my wife on staff. There is no doubt in my mind that my wife is qualified for this job. Its possible she is over qualified, but I doubt that as well.

cliffs:
1) wife applies for new job
2) wife's supervisors give less than glowing references, despite glowing reviews and raises double of institutional averages for last two years
3) wife gets eliminated
4) wife calls immediate super, supervisor to call back HR department
5) outcome uncertain...
6) i want her to get a big raise so I can buy some expensive brewing equipment. 🙂

If the references don't accurately reflect her job performance/rating, someone is in deep dodo.

Why would they want to give her a good reference so she could get a good paying job and leave? They have a great worker, pay her too little and their only other choices would be... hire less of a worker for the same money, or pay a lot more for the same caliber.

Companies suck that way.
sorry for your wife
🙁

the HR department at her current place, or the HR for the place where she is trying to get hired?

She did call the hiring committee director and told him that the feedback didn't really make sense to her for the reasons i cited above. She knows a lot of those people though some work she did with them so she can call them directly. The person who did the phone calls for the reference checks is a bit odd in some respects (according to my wife, based on previous interactions) and its possible that she mis-interpretted comments.

yeah, but unfortunately, that person is fairly secure in her job. This is assuming that the naysayer was the dept supervisor.... My impression of that person, based on the crap that I have heard about is that she is not really qualified for her job and just does enough to get by, BUT that is enough to be secure given that the college is pretty small-fry to begin with.

The HR dept where she curretly works; HR issues should be dealt w/ in person, not through any other person HomeBrewerDude.

I'll disagree with that, though in general you are correct IMO. She is on good terms with her immediate supervisor, and her best chance to get back in the running is to have her boss call back the interviewer and 'clear up any misunderstandings'.

If they made stuff up just to keep her there, sue their a$$es off

that would be jumping to conclusions....

But if you found out that's what they did, what will you do?

we'll discuss that if and when we have information supporting that assertion...

That makes for a lame thread. We want visions of you rolling naked in millions of dollars from the upcoming lawsuit.

I believe it would be actionable in civil court.

sux man, why would you use your current higher ups as refernces though, the obviously don't want here to leave. Using peers might've been a better option
