To be street legal it needs to have
1. working headlights
2. working tail lights
3. 4 stroke engine (atleast in CA) these are 2 strokes and are limited off road use by DOT specification
4. minimum road height.
Even if it was road legal, a helmet will be required to ride it then on the streets.. and if your goign to do so you will need to have gear, i wouldnt want road rash sitting in that position.
If you want to buy them, the cheap 300 range ones are chinese made.. if you search ebay and craigslist you will see them selling all the time.. however the more powerful race versions costs about 1500+.. check http://.tricktape.com for those high end models.
my bicycle is no more street legal when its on the sidewalk so I dont get hit downtown in rush hour traffic... The legality is of absolutley zero concern to me. I'd just like to see if it would be practical assuming a zero traffic environment, which some of my signifigantly longer alternate routes do feature.
thanks for all of the other advice though... its pretty consistent with what ive been finding...
I'm seeing these things more and more here in LA and they irritate<sp?> the hell outta me. There are vaild reasons why these things aren't street legal. Nothing like being stuck behind going 20mph because there is not room to pass. They are a freaking annoying hazzard and anyone taller than a jockey looks like a total moron riding them.
I'd much rather navigate around a person on a bicycle because 1. you're knees/legs aren't all sprawled out when you are ridding a bike (i.e. you take up less room on the road) and 2. I can actually SEE a person on a bicycle when I'm passing them.
