I live in the bay area and there is a increase in popularity for these mini pocket bikes which are bascially 45cc mini bikes which look exactly like the real thing on a smaller scale. Was wondering if anyone knows of some websites that are geared towards these, or know of any place in the bay area that sells this stuff. Does anyone have one of these? I drove one around one this passed weekend when some of my buddies who own the real and mini bikes brought their mini pocket bikes to drive around an empty park and its pretty fun.

I know i wouldnt be able to use it on the sidewalk, but if I stayed on the out of the way residential streets in my borough, i dont think anyone would hassle me...

think these things are practical/fun enough for a 2.5 mile commute to replace a dying 21 speed?

personally... i wouldn't even bring it into traffic... its hard enough on bicycle... how much more for something that makes you lower than eye level of drivers... and well know how good drivers are in this country. :frown: if you get hit... your upper body takes the smack... :(

well, if its gas powered, I wouldnt have to go through the really crazy rush hour parts of town that im sort of forced to go through on my bike....

as for motorcycle licence, if you need one to ride this, then you must be able to use it on the test... I heard the smaller the bike the easier... a buddy with a ninja 600cc couldnt make the turns tight enough.

I hope i wouldnt have to licence and register it just to be able to punch it on the street from time to time...

Uhh..you can get a permit without having to do any driving test, only you arent able to drive anyone else around.

local laws are that a permit must be renewed every 6 months, and that permit status bars night time and passenger operation. I have better things to do than play with the dmv every six months and 3am in non residential neighborhoods.... dude, im a college kid... sometimes it gets dark at 5:30.....

btw, if you clicked on the link, youd know we arent talking about passengers here....

I'm gunna give my local autozone a call (visit with checkbook mabye?) tomorrow and see if they carry them. I think I need to sit one one myself before I can make any judgements regarding practicality... this sounds like so much fun.

<<< very exited

these bikes ARE NOT STREET LEGAL.

To be street legal it needs to have

1. working headlights
2. working tail lights
3. 4 stroke engine (atleast in CA) these are 2 strokes and are limited off road use by DOT specification
4. minimum road height.

Even if it was road legal, a helmet will be required to ride it then on the streets.. and if your goign to do so you will need to have gear, i wouldnt want road rash sitting in that position.

If you want to buy them, the cheap 300 range ones are chinese made.. if you search ebay and craigslist you will see them selling all the time.. however the more powerful race versions costs about 1500+.. check http://.tricktape.com for those high end models.

yea, seriously, i get so annoyed when i see morons ride these in the middle of the freaking street when i'm driving. i once saw 3 guys at a stop light. these people dont' realize how dangerous it is to ride little bikes like that in the middle of the street

my bicycle is no more street legal when its on the sidewalk so I dont get hit downtown in rush hour traffic... The legality is of absolutley zero concern to me. I'd just like to see if it would be practical assuming a zero traffic environment, which some of my signifigantly longer alternate routes do feature.

thanks for all of the other advice though... its pretty consistent with what ive been finding...

Don't they have to be a certain CC before they have to be street legal?

Those things are also loud. I saw a kid get pegged by a paintball because all he did was ride it up and down a street. Someone musta been trying to sleep/study/practice paintballing/etc.
