Mini-Musselman triathlon race report

I did a local tri this weekend, one of the larger ones locally (666 finishers <-mark of the devil!). The Half-iron distance is on Sunday, but I did the short (750 swim, 16 bike, 3 run), making it my 5th sprint triathlon, but first in two years (took last year off mainly to continue to rehab a knee issue).

Megatomic came out to check out the race and couldn't help but desire afterward to target triathlons again as a supplement to his long running.

The rain held back and the weather was quite honestly superb. It was rather chilly, which for summer means fast racing! The race is well organized but the water, particularly near the finish in the canal, reminds me of swimming in a toilet. Ugh.

Still, my swim time was right on my fastest pool time of the same distance, much to my surprise. Bike was my best event, as always (43rd quickest bike split, I think), and the entire race consisted of me blasting by people who looked like they were out for a leisurely ride.

Then came the run. And the entire run consisted of people blasting by me looking like I was out for a leisurely jog.

Two years ago I had wicked cramping on my run in my last race. I thought it was possibly lack of run training, but too much hydration/food. It's 100% absolutely not a salt or water issue because this year I toned that way back, and considering what I can do in training and the sweat I was putting out (not tons, due to temps), I have no idea what the problem was. The cramping this time gently started on the bike and came on huge on my first run step. My entire chest felt like I couldn't pull enough air (like it wouldn't expand), so my run time suffered. It is not a stroke or anything else silly but just crazy cramping. As soon as the run stopped, it went away. Any ideas?. I had to take many fast little gasps as I couldn't expand my rib cage fully. That said, despite the entire thing being painful, my run time could have been worse.

Overall I got 64th. Now that I'm in the 30-39 age group, it's obvious that to ever place in this in a big event will require a great deal more training. I had one hour 26 minutes. Top guy was 1 hour 9 minutes. That is a world of difference.

Congrats on a great race and it was a pleasure meeting you and your family. Your kids are awesome. 🙂

I have no idea what was going on with your breathing, that sounds scary as hell. Have you ever talked with your physician about it?

Somehow I don't think she'd have much to say.

I'm not cavalier with my health, but I really think it was just a wicked diaphram-type cramp. As soon as I'd speed up even a tiny bit the jarring, plus extra air required would make it hurt, so I'd slow down then be fine. It seems maybe a little possible that my position on the bike could be responsible at least in part, since it did start a little bit on that.

The only other times I've ever cramped have been with a belly of too much food or fluid. I had a cramp at the end of a 5k (typical under-rib one) a couple years ago but again I had been drinking too much so it was sitting in my gut, I think.

My wife is wanting me to do a sprint tri with her. I'm afraid she'd beat me 🙂

She's also potentially putting together a triathlon team (not sure what it's called), where one person swims, another bikes, and another runs. We'd have a great runner, she'd do pretty well on the bike, and she wants me to swim. As long as they aren't counting on me doing well, I might consider it. I could swim 2 miles in under 1:30, maybe even closer to 1:00, but I'm sure there will be people much faster than that. Hell, I'm an old man, they should let me subtract one minute per year older than the fastest one out there.

2 miles in 1:00 is a really solid swim. You're talking about a relay team. I believe you could have one person do two legs of the race, normally that would be the swim and then run to recover after the swim.

Yeah, the idea was to have the 3 of us compete together. I'm a strong swimmer (did it competitively for 11 years and my sister almost made the Olympics), but 1:00 would take more training than I'm doing now. Especially since I'm only casually swimming in the pool now and I know lake swimming will be much more challenging.

The other guy would be the strong link for the team and could excel either running or biking. He recently finished 3rd overall in a 50 mile run 😱.

There is a sprint triathalon in 2 weeks in my hometown, no way I'd be ready for it. Maybe next year though if I learn to swim stronger.

I've thought of it but don't do them because a) I'm not sure they're at the right time for me (evenings are basically a no-go) and b) I just am not a massive fan of swimming 🙂

It's a shame there aren't more duathlons locally. I see that the spring and autumn classic are actually quite cheap compared to a triathlon. I really have to wonder why the heck these local sprint triathlons have to be $80, then $10 for the daily USAT membership. That is, just quite frankly, damn insane in cost. I wonder how much money they make on them.
