A good mechanic can patch up a rust bucket so that it's drivable, too, but a properly designed car can be used safely without all the extra effort. Fact is, if you give regular Joe a junky car, he's not going to make a lot of repairs before hitting the road. We can't expect people to secure their machines before hooking them up to the Internet.

This is statement works because cars, for the most part are mainstream, but if you throw a regular Joe in front of an open source operating system, they won't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Hell, the majority of people that can 'use' a computer don't even know Windows very well.

Very good read. Funny how I nitpick that statement, and let the fact that Tocqueville Institution says that 'asserted that freely distributed code is more susceptible to terrorist attack than proprietary software.' 😉

But if the average joe got an open source application that was designed well, there would be much less of a chance of him screwing up. It doesnt have to just be an OS, think of all the crappy programs out there that are not operating systems and you may see the point.
 
I think that open source software is awesome, but I also feel it's more complicated. It's not candy coated to the needs of the 'Average Joe,' but I do see what you're saying...
