Mini DV Camcorder ***SORTED***

Hi all,

Purchased myself a JVC Mini DV camcorder over weekend. The problem is when connected via USB i can capture video direct from the camera but i cant import the videos from the tape (i cant find the camera when looking for vid). Im mon windows XP pro and updated all drivers. So far ive heard that i should go firewire because the quality is much better which is fair enough but the manual says i can use USB. Any advice?

Thanks

*EDIT i understand that has nothing at all to do with - Software - Apps, Programming and Games. please accept my apologies i didnt realise i was in wrong section.

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to use firewire. From what I know from using a friend's Sony TRV-33 miniDV, the USB cable is only for transferring pictures.

Model - GR-DX25EK, I think i am resigned to the fact that i need a firewire card the Mrs. wont be happy though lol. I also cant transfer pictures. From my understanding when all cables are attached i should see an icon for the camera in "My Computer"? The main problem i have is when i try to import from camera i cant find the camera to import, Videos or Photos??

On my jvc camcorder u need to set the function on it to stills before you can transfer the pictures. I think it then just appears as a removeable drive in windows explorer. You might also need to set it to playback instead of record too. If youre still stuck im sure the manual will have the answers 🙂

Dude, looking at page 33 of your manual it says you should be able to transfer stills AND video using the USB connection. Did you install the drivers from the CD like it says to do? For transfer of stills the camera should appear as a disk drive in Windows Explorer. You should be able to capture video using the Pixela software that came with the camera or 3rd party software like Pinnacle Studio. And obviously, make sure the camera is turned on and set to VCR.

User Manual

If you do want to try the firewire connection instead you should be able to pick up a firewire card and cable for around $10-$15 - your wifey shouldn't be too upset with that. Tell her ALL the guys on Anandtech have one..... 🙂

John P. thanks for the in depth research youve done it is appreciated. As far as I know I have followed all the steps in manual but just to be sure im gonna go over em again from afresh. Im gonna give JVC a ring as well see what they say. Probably invest in firewire as well bode well for the future!

I'll pass your comments on as well to the Mrs. 😀

FWIW, while I don't have a JVC (I have a Sony DV camcorder), my experience with capturing with firewire has been much better than my experience capturing using USB. Every forum I read on the topic stated that even though it is technically possible to capture using USB, firewire gives much more dependable results...

Not sure if it was me being a little slow pr JVC being stoopid but appears that i could only get the video from the tape using software provided by JVC and limnited options provided by the USB so bought myself a firewire card 😀 and now i can use numerous progs to get my video, thanks for all the advice.
