He has the support of Roy Lee Cooke (of October Sky Fame) and Linda Longstreth (House of Delegates, WV) so hopefully they will get enough people behind them to do something

Does he want something like "Talk like a Pirate Day" or "Teacher Appreciation Day" for miners, or does he want a holiday for miners, like Labor Day and Memorial Day?

Something like a secretarys day, or Sysadmin day. He just feels that they need to be recognized, and my father having been a coal miner for 20+ years, I feel the same

I'm sorry, While the "Disasters" in the past few years are indeed tradgic, and bear remembering; I feel that they in no way deserve their own day.

Believe me, I feel for those who lost loved ones, and agree that mining is a thankless, sometimes dangerous job, that derserves recognition to give it a holliday is too much.

According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the average yearly deaths from mining between 1991 and 1999 is 93

The average number of work-related roadway deaths per year from 1992-2001? 1482

Why not have a "Truck-Driver Memorial Day"???

Shucks, 200 people per year die riding in the back of pickup trucks... Should they also get a day?

Again, because I know I'll be flamed for my comments; let me reiterate:

My heart goes out to those in the mining community who have lost loved ones, their deaths were not in vain, because they died serving a thankless task without which we would not enjoy many of our modern convinences.

It just seems a little silly to me to start petitioning for/handing out hollidays for a proffession that is relatively safe by comparison...

More people die in plane crashes in the US than do in Mining accidents...

General aviation - collateral deaths- 14
playground accidents- 15
dog bites- 20
mountaineering- 30
skydiving- 35
skiing- 35
lightning strikes- 85
Mining- 93
insect stings- 100
food allergies- 125
SCUBA- 140
falling in bathtub- 300
bicycling- 750
recreational boating- 800
general aviation- 820
work related automotive- 1482
weather hazards- 1600
fires- 4000
drowning- 4800
pedestrian-traffic accidents- 5500
food poisoning- 6500
suffocation- 10000
accidental falls- 12000
AIDS- 16000
drunk drivers- 17000
homicide- 22000
suicide- 31000
firearms- 35000
automobile accidents- 43000
heart disease- 750000

...We should probably also commemerate Victims of Lightning-Strikes and Insect-Bites...

EDIT

If this petition is more along the lines of what the previous poster said about "talk like a pirate day" but for miners, go for it... I just don't see it being an actual day we're supposed to "remember the victims"

I agree. If they wanted something that would give more thanks, maybe they should have tried harder in life.

And don't give me the 'they didn't have all of the opportunities you had' bs because I am working my ass off going for my MA after working 60+ hrs per week to get my BA and buy a house.

And not a single cent of help from anyone.

Thats not what I was saying at all...

I believe that mining is an important and respectable proffesion, just not one deserving of it's own "day"

A miner isn't someone who can't find a job anywhere else...miners get paid a good salary and they do because it's a dangerous job and not a lot of people want the job. Sure, they might not have a graduate degree, but they can easily find a job somewhere where they won't die.

so fvcking what. you want a cookie?

id imagine most of them chose to be a miner because they like the work and it pays the bills.

you act like its the miners asking for this day or something, when its not.

Yeah, it can be a somewhat important profession and the recent tragedies are indeed that - tragic - but I do not think it warrants have a Miners Day.

Heck, if so, while we are at it how about having an Analtyical Chemist day for me? We make your life better through chemistry, so should we not be recognized?

Ok mr smart ass, where are your stats from those who died from black lung? Where are you stats from those who died from emphysema? Where are you stats of those with back injuries from the mines? Those who are deaf? Those who have lost their eyesight etc?

What about the miners in the early 1900's that eeked out a living in company homes making BARELY enough to feed their families.

And for the comment of they can find work elsewhere....Not here in WV they cant. For those that dont have an education due to a plethora of reasons their only hope of making a DECENT living is the mines and they dont make much money there. Most miners make $35-$50k a year. So before you spout off your mouth about something you know absolutely NOTHING about learn your facts and stop spreading BS you think as fact

Miners have it harder than you can ever realise. Go down in a mine sometime and work for 1 day and I assure you that you will change your tune.

This isnt about the miners that have died recently, this is about the miners of the past and their hard work for very little reward

the only arguement gabe has on you is for Roadway crews, their jobs are just as dangerous and deadly. However they dont have the future possible problems that Miners do.

i feel its warranted.

Not everyone is special. Figure it out people. If everyone is special, no one is special. If we all took the time to reflect and have a "day" for everyone that brought us here, we'd never get anything done. It's called "history" for a reason: it's over.

so you think that Mining is history?

wow.

just because its done in WV, and other states that arent viewed as "high class" states, doesnt mean its over...

I acknowledge that mining is a Good Choice for many, both to make a decent living, and to apply their skills.... There is no dobut in my mind that it is both a dangerous and hard job... much deserving of it's pay... My ONLY ISSUE is that of a day devoted entirely to the victims of mining desasters... While their lives are worth no less than the rest of those that died doing their jobs, I challange the fact that their lives are worth more. No dobut those that lost loved ones are upset, and no dobut they need consultation, but a holliday will do nothing but glorify a proffesion that needent be glorified... If we can all recognizae and appreciate the miners lost, and their families, that should be enough, there needent be an entire day devoted to such commererance...

You are missing the point entirely, this isnt about a few miners who lost their lives recently. This is about the miners who have given their all so their families could have food on the table. Not so much the miners of today as the miners of the past, but the ones today still deserve the respect

This still would fall under labor day.
