Just got a $562/yr auto insurance decrease by switching from Esurance to Allstate (for two people).

Then I find out that Allstate bought Esurance, and Esurance is supposed to be the 'cheaper' option.

I lol all the time when Allstate or Met send me shit. "Save up to $400 on your current insurance". Then I go get a quote and they're $400 higher for half the coverage than Geico.

I pay $396/6month for my insurance.

I am now paying $~545/ea/6mo for my fiancee and myself...full coverage. With an accident from 2007 and a few violations from about the same time frame.

I've done my shopping (as I always do) and Allstate turned out to be the cheapest this time around.

Geico is cheapest for me, with progressive being next (I used them previously) and all-state being the most expensive of the three.

Not to mention I got rear-ended nearly a month ago now, only have light damage, and literally just got off the phone with all-state (the kid who hit me has them) and they finally approved it. There's about 10 hours of actual repair work on the vehicle, so 2 business days to fix it, but it took them about 20 business days to approve a rear-end accident claim.

They ain't the only ones. I had to deal with farmers and getting t-boned from a driver who ran through a red light (mind you, it was about 5 seconds after the light had turned red and my light had turned green). Kid didn't even make an effort to stop/slow down. After about 2 weeks or better, they had finally "heard the story from their customer" despite numerous police reports and citations being issued solely to their customer for running a red fucking light. Car was severely damaged a day prior to Thanksgiving, and got it back about a week after New Years.

I believe the kid had Farmer's Insurance. My guess is that all of them work like that. Just kinda pissed me off that Allstate didn't really do anything to help our side, and essentially told us to deal with them up to the point that they try to come back on us. As my old man says, if I am paying your premiums for insurance... when insurance is in question, you would think your insurer would at least step in and fight some of the fight for you. Guess not.

could be worse. my aunt got hit by someone and she was quite seriously inujured, She and the person that hit her have the same insurance provider, over a year later its still not all taken care of because the insurance just wanted to settle and she still and might for life have some health issues

We're paying $915/6mo for 3 cars and two drivers, two cars with full coverage - through Progressive.

By far the cheapest rate we found...

It's not the "cheaper" option but it is the company that accepts riskier drivers. Let's say there are two types of drivers, safe (Type A) and risky (Type B) and that there are two insurance companies, safe (Company A) and risky (Company B). Type A drivers belong in Company A and Type B in Company B, fairly obviously. But if you're a Type B and try to get into Company A you likely will not be offered coverage, or it will have a large surcharge. What most people don't know is that if you're Type A and in Company B you will often pay more than if you were in Company A. That's because Company B is actuarily structured to accept risky drivers and even safe drivers will get some additional risk assessment.

In both of these cases the insurer has two conflicting legal requirements: a statutory duty to the claimant to handle claims in a timely manner and a contractual duty to the insured to negotiate on their behalf in good faith. If the insurer fails to settle the claim or reserve their rights within a certain time period, typically 30 days, they violate the statutory duty to the claimant. If the insurer fails to conduct a thorough investigation, which always includes a statement from the insured, they are in breach of contract and covenant of good faith.

Typically, if the case is somewhat obvious given damage and police reports, the insurer will attempt to contact the insured for 30 days. If after that time the insured is not reached the insurer may settle based on their judgment. If the case is not obvious and the insured cannot be reached for a statement (which is different than the insured refusing to make a statement) the insurer will, probably 95% of the time, outright deny the claim. You see, the civil penalties for breach of contract and covenant of good faith are harsher than the statutory penalties for claims handling practices.

Insurers will always (read: almost always) insist on a statement from the insured before settling regardless of apparent fault.

Amazing how much insurance varies for people. Progressive saved me about $250/6 mo over State Farm. And even though a lot of people think of State Farm as being expensive, I also got quotes from Farmers, Allstate, and Geico, and all were MORE expensive than State Farm for LESS coverage.

Go figure.

Yeah they have a time allowance (which varies by state I believe, it's 30 days in Wisconsin) to contact their insured party. It doesn't make much sense in some situations, but does make me wonder what their reasoning is sometimes - ie they expect their insured party to have video from 5 different angles showing the other person was really at fault that somehow never came to light before then. In my situation, I was stopped at a red light behind two or three other cars and got hit square in the back. The police didn't even show up since nobody was hurt and both vehicles were completely drive-able, but it is what it is I guess.

Also, the only way your insurance company will "fight for you" in these types of situations is if you put the claim through them, pay your deductible, and have them fix your car. Then they'll go after the other insurance company for the money and send you a refund for your deductible... six months later after they both get done screwing around.

That definitely sucks. I'd almost bet money that they treat that like two separate claims and fight themselves on who is going to pay it, I've seen it happen before.

Ever see the math they use to come up with insurance rates? My sister is an actuary and works for an insurance company, they may as well call them "arbitraries" to be more accurate description of the type of math they do.

I need to switch, I feel like i'm getting raped by State Farm. Three years ago I was paying $96/mo. for USAA in Wyoming. I moved to Kentucky and switched to State Farm at $120/mo (USAA wanted to raise me to $140/mo, I guess because bigger city, not sure). Three years later, and I'm at $140/mo with State Farm. No accidents, no tickets, nothing, it just keeps inching it's way up every 6 months. I should probably switch back to USAA, I'm sure it's cheaper now.

Just got off the phone with Allstate again. Since we both took defensive driving classes it will go down another $40/6mo

Esurance wanted to renew at: 1380
Renewing with Allstate at: 1090

NOT BAD!

Aren't they the ones that advertise that your rate drops if you go without an accident? Maybe they figure you're more likely to get into one as you age.
