I was at the Minado in Glen Cove (across from Roosevelt Field mall in LI) the other day and the food wasn't bad. And I'm not even a seafood/Japanese food fan. Lunch at $14/pp was very decent. Planning on a surprise birthday dinner party with ~15 of our closest friends there next month.

Went to the Minado's in Manhattan last night. Nothing special, food was just average but I'd probably go back again.

Any recommendations for a good place in Manhattan?

Ok, let's see.

My current favorite is Sushi of Gari, mostly because it's right across the street from me. Don't order off the menu, ask the waitress to have Gari prepare you something. I can't remember the name of what I got, but basically, it's a selection of their best cuts of fish of the day, all with different sauces. The place is tiny; make a reservation. It's also pretty pricey.

Sushi Hana is pretty good, they're my staple for mid-priced sushi. There are several locations.

Haru is ok, but over priced for what you get and overcrowded. There are a bunch of locations.

Sushi Samba is fun and they have lots of weird, funky rolls--it's a Japanese-Brazilian joint near Union Sq.

Ota-ya is pretty good, mid-priced sushi in the range of Sushi Hana.

Nobu is awesome, but not really for the sushi, more for their signature items. It is very expensive, and very hard to get a reservation for. Keep an eye out for celebrities there. You can also go to Nobu Next Door, which has pretty much the same menu, but no reservation policy.

There are also a bunch of UES sushi joints I've eaten at before, but can't remember the name of. And of course, there are the zillion low-price delivery/buffet places that I don't really trust..
