min-Display Port Bottleneck?

Trying to get three monitors going with a single 7950. Unfortunately, two of the monitors are VGA, and won't work with the mini-Display port to DVI adapter i have, even with converters. I can get the setup going, but i wanted to know if that mini-Display Port adapter will bottleneck a 1080p monitor attached to it, or if it will work just as well as a Regular DVI connection.

It will be fine.
Single link DP -> DVI connector will be enough for 1920x1080 at 60Hz.
If it's 120Hz you might need a DP -> Dual link DVI converter, but if it's just 60Hz a regular inexpensive DP -> active single link DVI should be fine.

Why not try mini-Display port to VGA adapters.

Display port is all digital. DVI-VGA only works with DVI-A, which display port to DVI will not have (it will only be DVI-D).

This will not work. Any sort of "mini display port to VGA" adapter would have to be active with a DAC and logic to do the conversion.

No, it will not "bottleneck" anything to do 1080p over that. Why would you think it would?

Never had used one before. And i know they had restrictions. This card specifically says only up to 1080p for mini-display port adapters, So, i wasn't sure if those limitations may have meant general performance degradation in any way.

Nope, just means it is single-link only.

edit: or they've artificially limited it for some reason. Mini-dp typically can do 2560x1600.

Mini DP does actually carry a VGA signal. Otherwise, all those $14 mini DP to VGA adapters won't work. These adapters cost too little to have any active conversion circuitry.

Just tried an hdmi->dvi->vga.

Didn't work. Haha.

I believe that you are wrong. DVI-I includes both a digital and an analog signal, but DisplayPort is purely digital.

Edit: Price has very little to do with it. USB sound cards have 16-bit DACs in them, and they sell for $1 shipped from HK.

I am currently running my monitor at 2560x1600 off a mini DP-DP adapter. The monitor came with a DP cable.

Correct, DP is digital only, but it also has a 3.3V line that can power low current conversion circuitry, but as with all digital to analog conversions, quality is very important.

I bought a $8 displayport to vga converter off ebay like a year ago. Worked fine for me while I was running eyefinity.

The displayport on the radeons apparently carry dvi-i, so it is possible to passively convert from the DP connector.

However, keep in mind that the card is capable of only one analog signal. So if you are already running a VGA monitor, you cannot run a second, no matter which port you use.

When did AMD stop including dual RAMDACs? Everyone advertised that feature for so long I never thought they would get rid of it.

Can someone else confirm this statement. I am looking to run 3 VGA.
