The Army is the only branch that can 100% guarantee your job assuming that you pass the classroom portion.

That being said, Army life is a lot tougher then the Air Force. I cant speak for other branches, but I'm Army, and am from an Air Force family.

I'm really looking into coast guard. I left a message for my local recruiter however he's been out this week. I was just checking to see what everyone recommends. I have friends in the army and marines and they told me AF and CG are good military branches.

The Navy's Nuclear Field

Nuclear energy powers the Navy's submarines and most aircraft carriers at high speeds for years without refueling. Nuclear power is a challenging, attractive career field. It requires special, dedicated men and women with scientific and mathematical skills willing to train and work hard to achieve success.

The Navy's Nuclear Field program offers exceptional technical training in nuclear energy and nuclear propulsion to young, talented people who qualify. The training, some of the broadest and most comprehensive available anywhere, prepares young people to become experienced professionals in a high-tech field. The Navy's Nuclear Field program will help you build a foundation of technical knowledge and experience that can be valuable to you for many years to come.

I hope this is a joke. This you get contacted on (I am talking 15 years ago) for a 90+% ASVAB...I was 99%+...I also was working as an Engineering Intern in HS...the school is fast paced, but if you ask the right questions there is still a chance you can be repositioned. It is a great job if you get it.

At the time one of my best buds got palace work in the marines...easy job, but dangerous at the same time. We were all athletes too. Many got grunt jobs...once 'enlisted'. In college I knew a lot going in as officers (base)..a few better than that. Still it was on a plane to arabic wars.

Not my cup of tea.

On the non-military side...I know quite a few IS/IT guys just seeking jobs in hot zones. Making 6 figures + all living expenses covered. None have died, all have seen dying though.

Coast Guard is now considered part of the military essentially, after 9/11. They do more armed engagements on a regular basis (outside of Iraq and Afghanistan obviously) than the other branches with drug interdiction and such.

I understand where you are coming from, but today (even in 1989) they push the nuclear sub program on any good ASVAB scorer, knowing most will sign up and fail out.

Until you swear in though....you can get out of any contractual obligation.

If you do get in and make it to 'Nuclear Engineer' it's one of the best jobs ;)

I seriously debated it, it was a hot time for the US at that time.
