one of my friends found our her boyfriend will be stationed in italy for airborne school and is planning on moving there with him. i am not entirely convinced thats possible from what i could find. if getting married solved their problem they'd do that but even still its sounding like unless you are an officer it wouldnt be possible? i want to say he is a PFC if that makes a difference.
 
I don't know how it is in the U.S., but here in Canada if that situation occurred they wouldn't be entitled to any of the benefits (cost move, etc), nor would they be able to live together (assuming he's a candidate on the course). She'd have to pay out of pocket for her own place.

Then again, different militaries, so I could definitely be wrong.

airborne school is in ft bennig georgia. and i haven't met any privates that got initial deployments to exotic, non-combat locales.

couple of things to clarify.

airborne school is after basic training at ft benning ga.

his permanent duty station is in italy.

they should have no problem with her moving to live with him no matter what the rank. i dont know what the base there is like, but when i was stationed at ft bragg, we lived off post in the city of fayetteville in an apartment. IDK what the apartment situation is like in italy.

thanks. i'll ask her here in a bit to clarify. he is finishing up basic atm. i was surprised to hear he'd be doing his training over seas so she may just not have asked the right questions on training/duty station.
 
I thought Army Airborne school was only like three weeks long. And it's very likely the boyfriend will be sent somewhere else afterwards. Is she going to move to Italy for three weeks?

Even when he reaches his first "permanent" assignment he will not be able to live off base while single unless he is promoted to probably an E-6. If they marry then they will likely be assigned family housing on base, or given housing pay and be able to live off the base if the on base housing is full.

But, even if he is married, the Army will not let him bring his wife along to live with him during training. They will pay him a housing allowance for his family dependents, since the Army requires that all members provide housing for their dependents, but she will be staying at home during his training.

She could be a camp follower living in motels as he bounces from station to station if she doesn't want to get married, provided she can afford it. His pay won't cover it, and he'll still be spending his nights in his assigned barracks on base.

I'd have your friend read the housing section of "What the Recruiter Never Told You."

not kidding, i dont think she has really had a reality check on this yet and may be just avoiding doing any research to stay in denial.

basically its sounding like its going to be expensive for her and not likely they will be able to live together
 
Airborne training is NOT in Italy.
To live there as his gf, she'd have to live on the local economy on her own. Not sure how you get a visa for that other than as a tourist?

thanks. assuming he does training in GA and the permanent duty station is in italy, can they live together in italy if they are married or as a low ranking soldier, is he required to live in a barraks like situation on base?
 
In the Air Force, if you're getting a permanent change of station overseas you can take your wife. If he's not married and an E3 or lower he'd probably have to live in a dorm. This is if it's the Air Force though. I have no idea what the Armies like, and it sounds like she has no idea what she's talking about.
 
without marriage she will run into visa problems as she would not be covered under the status of forces agreement. I'm not sure what Italy is like on that front, but Germany was something like 6 months of tourist visa before they come to deport you.

If they are not married, I don't see a PFC getting permission to live anywhere but the dorms, leaving her in the situations described above.

If they do get married, then everything would work just fine. (It can be difficult to get married anywhere in europe except the netherlands, so they should get married before he goes)
 
You only get base housing or a housing allowance if you are married AND if you get an accompanied tour.

I knew quite a few dudes who got assigned to Iceland on an unaccompanied tour (18) months and thought they could just bring their wife up.
They were quite surprised to find he should have asked the detailer for an accompanied tour (30 months) and his wife was not going to be given a place to stay and he was going to the barracks.

On top of that there are quite a few duty stations around the world that are ONLY unaccompanied tours. Married men either shouldnt apply or expect to be lonely for quite some time.
