Military people (especially Marines): is it possible to get kicked out...

before getting in?

I know a guy that signed up, and was flown out to a camp. But he came back like 10 days later saying he had to drop out due to a medical condition he had as a child (something that weakened his legs, but not polio). No discharge, just out.

Sounds fishy, is that possible? I would think they do a medical screening before paying for a plane ticket for a recruit.

Or is it possible he was such a screwup they decided they didn't want him?

I could almost promise it wasn't because he was a "screw up." The Marines don't discriminate against screw ups. In fact, they like screw ups. They will change their attitude because the screw up can disagree!

To answer your question, after closer scrutiny to his medical file, they probably found something and it disqualified him.

Yes, it's possible. They week a lot out in their (services) boot camps.

Yes, there are basic medical exams when you join. Once you get to BCT any problems you do have are likely to manifest themselves. That could result in getting discharged. You can also be immediately discharged for psych reasons. The fishy thing as above is how quickly he was out. Generally it has to be a VERY, VERY serious issue to get out of the Army in less that 45 days. They (Army, and probably the other branches) don't have you just "go home". You stay there until you are discharged.

the process in 1986 was this

sign up with recruiter, go into delayed entry
on enlistment day, go to the MEPS station
there they do a physical and swear you in and and the administrative work. i was told then where i was going to boot camp (the Navy had 3 boot camps open at that time). they gave me an airplane ticket and sent me to a hotel for the night, the flight was the next day
went to the airport the next day and flew to orlando FL
they bussed us to the base and processed us into boot camp. by that time it was after midnight, they took a group of 80 to form our company for boot camp. it was about 2 am before we got to sleep

about 4 am our company commanders (=drill instructors) came in and threw a couple of large metal trash cans across the room to wake us up for our first day of boot camp

er, maybe i got off track, people were rejected/sent home at all points in this process. some didn't get through MEPS, so got stopped during processing into boot camp, once boot camp started some got held up for lack of reading skills, some couldn't pass the swim test. some were held back for being overweight , etc, etc

so the story sounds a little bit off, but he may of just not given you all the exact details. but it basically could be true

who knows

That is exactly the same process as the Army is right now.

My son was in boot camp and the day before graduation another kid was released because of an eye problem. That would suck.

Oh no, it can be much worse.

I was with quite a few guys that had finished BCT AND AIT. They were in the process of being discharged because they failed the final PT test. They had otherwise finished all training. Incidently, one had failed the final by 5 seconds.

sounds like he got medically discharge. To my understanding there's...

dishonorable = looks bad on your record, you had to mess up pretty damn bad
general = might look bad, reason you seperated was something within your control
medical = shouldn't look bad, physical problem beyond your control
honorable = looks good... duh!

if he got kicked out that fast he did something exceptionally stupid, or he lied to MEPS.

a good friend of mine is being discharged in a few weeks. he got half way through SOI and had some kind of mental breakdown and did a stupid thing, did something very stupid, then proceded to start threating to do really stupid things to his COs. now he has a baby sitter until further notice.

edit: back to the topic at hand if he was there less than 180 (or maybe it was 90) days they'll give him an 'entry level seperation' it dosen't really say anything about him good or bad

A week is a unit of time. The phrase you are hoping to use is WEED out, as in removing the undesirables from a group, as in "weeding the garden".

Sounds like the guy with my group who said he would kill everyone in the platoon but then he would not have anyone to talk to.

Dishonorable and bad conduct are the two punitive discharges, which can only be given from a military court. Contrary to popular belief, dishonorable discharges are not handed out very often, but either one will screw you for life. Any reputable company is going to look somewhere else before hiring a dishonorably discharged individual.

There's also a discharge under other than honorable conditions. It's not as severe as a BCD, but it still doesn't look good. I cannot remember the circumstances for that one being given.

Yup it's very possible.

In fact during boot camp it seemed a lot of the guys that really WANTED it stay in got booted out for one reason or another and those that WANTED out stayed... ;)

this thread made me think of something interesting about the millitary.

when you enlist and enter the delayed entry program, if you like break your leg or arm or something, you will get sued for "destruction of government property." if it's found that you flagrantly and carelessly injured yourself, you'll have alawsuit on your hands.

Yeah, when you get there, just tell them you're gay and they'll kick you out faster than you can say "I'm gay!"
