I guess all I can do is see what the recruiter says. 30 days I can re-test. I better pickup a study guide and study my math.

Then you're perfect fodder for the Marines. "You've got 30 shots left soldier, and your M-16 is capable of 200 shots per minute. 30 times 200 is 6000. There's only about 50 enemies on that hillside, CHARGE!"

The M16 is capable of 800 rounds per minute. That's like 10 times as much as 200. So he could kill like a thousand soldiers, not just 50. Fool!

By the way, that answer scores a 46 on the ASVAB. So yeah, a 38? I dunno....

don't recall what mine was, but it was near perfect. hated taking that damn test. finished each section in well less than half the time allowed so I sat their in my desk and started nodding off. idiot giving it came by and asked if I was sure of my answers. no dude, i'm just making scantron shapes cause I want to waste my time on a saturday morning at an entirely voluntary event cause it's the hip thing to do.

I was the exact same way. 99th percentile on the test with a 'Military Score' of 7 I believe. IIRC, that basically meant that barring my color-blindness I could have any job, in any branch that I wanted (Assuming I met the other requirements, physical, rank, seniority, training, that sort of thing).

38... really? I mean, I don't want to imply negativity, my friend is definitely smarter than I am, and he definitely scored less than I did on the ASVAB and SAT. Some people just don't do well on written tests I guess.

Ahhh the ASVAB, what a great way to get out of class in high school. That was a fun test.

I took the ASVAB out of curiosity in high school and got 96. I took it about as seriously as a Myspace quiz, the thing was a joke... Did you fall asleep on the keyboard or something?

"AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1-99. An AFQT percentile score indicates the percentage of examinees in a reference group that scored at or below that particular score. For current AFQT scores, the reference group is a sample of 18 to 23 year old youth who took the ASVAB as part of a national norming study conducted in 1997. Thus, an AFQT score of 90 indicates that the examinee scored as well as or better than 90% of the nationally-representative sample of 18 to 23 year old youth."

38th percentile? How do you breathe? :p

That was a bit mean of me...

To be fair the guy next to me got a 11 if I remember correctly...

He ended up making it into the army with some waiver, "English as a second language" or something was the reason.

I got a 98 and asked a Marine recruiter what job would I be able to get. He told me that I could have gotten anything I wanted and said if I did join and request to be infantry, he would kick me out for being a dumbass.

Silly me, I should have googled the actual number.

So, it's more like "You've got 30 shots left, your M-16 is capable of 800 shots per minute. 30 times 800 is like 1000 or something. Charge!"

38th percentile? How do you breathe? :p

the sad part about the percentile numbers:

someone scoring in the 30th percentile on the ASVAB, a score that isn't high enough to get into the military without a waiver, scored higher than 30% of that 1997 cohort.

I hadn't looked at it like that.
Dear lord that's terrifying.

Knowing the people I've come across who are in the service or had been in the service, and the fact that they are in the service... and then realizing they are, at least, smarter than 30% of that cohort... that's a disturbing picture in my mind. Backwoods hicks in the military are smarter than 30% or more of the people who took that test.

Wow. I got a 92 on the test, and was invited to Navy nuke school. Turned it down, though, since I had enough money saved up to go a local college.

I took the ASVAB (AFQT?) Scored 98%, enlisted in Uncle Sam's Misguided Children (AKA Uncle Sam's Motorcycle Club) with a guarantee for Infantry in Vietnam.

When I got out 4 years later, a good friend wanted to re-enlist and talked me into taking his ASVAB for him so he could get a better test score...and a better job. I "dumbed it down" a bit and still got a 96 for him...they wanted to put him into electronics...but he could barely do basic math, let alone any of the "fuzzy math" required for electronics. The recruiter kept pushing and pushing...so he said "Fuck it" and went into the ANG in his old MOS instead of re-enlisting.

Don't forget, recruiters can promise you anything, just to get you to sign that piece of paper.

Typical Marine type - does not even know what he is.

Remember that:

A Marine can crawl.
A Soldier can walk.
A Sailor can swim.

Has anyone seen a person fly:D

Am I really that old?

Back in my day they used GT scores - you took the ASVAB but they scored you with a GT score.

Max was 130, you needed like a 50 to get in the service and needed to score I think 100 to re-enlist. If you did not have 100 upon enlisting they sent you to school on weeknights while you were on active duty in the hoped you would test higher and then could re-enlist.

I was active duty '93 - '96.

Only the initiated will use their GT score. The uninitiated need the AFQT percentile score to gauge themselves. The Army still uses the General Technical for certain MOS requirements, other MOS such as 88M and 92G (truck drivers and cooks) use the OF (Operator and Food) score.

scoring

Motor Transport Operator (88M)
Qualifying scores.
(a) A minimum score of 90 in aptitude area OF in Armed Services Vocational aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests administered prior to 2 January 2002.
(b) A minimum score of 85 in aptitude area OF on ASVAB tests administered on and after 2 January 2002.

Food Service Specialist (92G)
) Qualifying scores.

Barnacle (USCG)
Qualifying scores.
(a) A minimum score of 39 in aptitude area Verbal Ability in Armed Services Vocational aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests administered prior to 2 January 2002.
(b) A minimum score of 38 in aptitude area Verbal Ability on ASVAB tests administered on and after 2 January 2002.

I guess you still need to be able to order a Crabby Patty at the galley or whatever.
