Miles Davis - Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way

So I've been digging up CDs I have'nt listened to in awhile and I came across Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way. All I can say this is just really good free jazz and fusion in a nice little package. Very atmospheric and moody music, excellent for reading or driving.


I put on In A Silent Way last night as I went to sleep and just closed my eyes and absorbed the music. Man, nothing beats listening to good music.
 
I respect them for what they are, but I really can't stand listening to his fusion stuff. Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain are still my faves.

You know to be honest I did'nt really care for those albums when I first heard them (I was about 17 or 18) but I would occasionaly play them and eventually I really understood what he was doing. It was the exact same way when I first heard Weather Report and Return to Forever.
 
I still love plopping Coltrane's Love Supreme into the CD player. Esp. when I have some wine or brandy handy and it's a rainy evening. 🙂
 
Bonus time is coming up soon and I'm thinking of buying the entire Miles electric discography but I want to avoid buying repeats of the same material. Anyone on ATOT familar with Miles electric albums? Which ones are included in the box sets? What albums are essentially repeats of other recordings?

i have almost all of 'em (no box sets, though): Pangaea, Dark Magus, Big Fun, Agharta,
Get up with it, Live-Evil, Black Beauty, ...

it's all good, but after 1975 the quality was erratic.

Sketches of Spain is my favorite of his followed closely by Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, and then Bitches Brew.

I can understand if you don't like Bitches Brew, but In a Silent Way shouldn't be too "fusion" for you.

And Conjur--good call, I broke back out my original Coltrane LP last week. :thumbsup:

I'm buying a turntable next week. I have a bunch of albums I haven't played in years.
 
Regardless of the artist, more people my/our age should appreciate jazz. Above almost any form of music, I think that jazz has been absent from listener's minds for too long now.

Obviously I have a far greater interest in music than most people, but still...any appreciation from something outside of the mainstream would be great to see in younger people. I even listened to a country album yesterday...although I can't say that'll happen too often. 😉

On a slightly different note, anyone enjoy Bob James as much as I do? "Nautilus" just makes me tingly, even after hearing it for the n thousandth time. Same with Donald Byrd's "Wind Parade" (among some others that don't jump out at me right now)...

I love Nautilus, in fact I'm always looking for songs similar to that one. I'll have to check out Byrd's Wind Parade.

Do you listen to any Grover Washington Jr? His Mister Magic album is excellent.
 
As a trumpet player myself, Miles is one of my fav's. However my all time favorite is Clifford Brown. If you haven't heard Blues Walk, you are missing out.
