(Mildly Warmish) Intel Anypoint USB Wireless (not 802.11) - $29 at Walmart

Was at Walmart this morning. I noticed they had these on clearance for $29 a piece. They are NOT 802.11 standard. They use the HomeRF standard, so they are 1.6/mb and only compatible with Proxim or Symphony (I think). Box says they are only compatible with other Intel Anypoints. My Walmart only had one in stock, so I didn't bother. I'm looking to go 802.11 anyways...

Just thought I'd throw it out there for anyone who's interested...

I have the USB and PCMCIA card version of this wireless network. In short: It works great, especially with Win XP.

While it's only 1.6mbs, truth is, your cable modem service only rarely gets above 1mbs anyhow, unless you're doing some serious downloading.

So, if you want a cheap, reliable network, go pick up two of these USB Anypoints and bang, you have a $60 wireless network. That's a good deal!

I picked up the last two at my local Wal Mart also , Staples had 2 more , but they wouldn't pricematch the d@mn things . I have been using them to stream mp3's to my lappy , works fine .

I saw like one of these at my Walmart, if they had more so that I could actually hook up 2 computers together it would have been nice.

Picked up a USB model and PC Card model at Walmart for $29 each. Not bad...if it works 😉

USB model was marked $97 and the PC Card was marked $57. Both scanned at $29.

I have live in a small condo, so hopefully this works. Hope there's not too much interference...

Setup was a breeze. I have Windows XP running on my laptop and desktop. I just loaded up the drivers, and used Windows XP's Network Setup Wizards. I didn't use Intel's software. It took under 30 minutes. Most of the time waiting for drivers to update and install. Truly seamless. I am on my laptop, using remote desktop to control my desktop right now. A testament to how cool WinXP is too 🙂

Wireless network for $60. It's fast enough to feel like broadband on my laptop. Thanks, cricky!

Just picked one up at the Walmart in Roseville, MI, they now have one left. I have been using a USB adapter and PC card for about a year now, so this will be a cheap way for me to connect another PC.

Is there a place to find a cheap router for this? I would like to hook my desktop and laptop into one hub in the closet somewhere.

Office Max had some Proxim Symphony HomeRF PCMCIA cards and ISA cards on clearance for $29.xx. Couldn't find the USB version at Walmart, only the PCMCIA cards (with the $29 price tag).

I found the PC Card versions at store near me. It rang up as $19, so I bought all three. Now if I could only find some USB models... The other stores I checked did not have any at all.

Hate to rain on your parade, but justdeals.com has the same kinda stuff (1.6Mbit wireless) for $15. You can get either the usb or pcmcia version. Yes I know shipping is outrageous, but if you're getting 2 it'll definitely be cheaper than walmart. About $20 cheaper.
