Were you one? What nation?

were you a citizen of an occupied nation that faced Gorbechev's tanks in 1990 during his desperate cling to "preserve the Soviet Union" (a terrible euphemism that means little to most of us), your opinion of him would be quite different.

Were you one? What nation?

my GF--not myself.

she is Latvian, born and raised under Soviet occupation. she gets a bit angry any time Gorbechev is mentioned, as she remembers running out to the streets as his tanks rolled in to her home town.

So how Slavic is her accent? Can she say "Moose and squirrel must die" sexily enough to raise wood? 😀

The only Latvian-born woman I know has no accent whatsoever, unless possibly a southern accent from being here so many years.

Sooner or later the people will get tired of communist leaders and the corruption and push for greater power for the people. Another decade perhaps.

No need to say that communists were very corrupt. Actually, corruption is more widespread in so-called capitalism systems that it was in socialist.communist system.
Why? More OPPORTUNITIES...and for business and for corruption...

Capitalist system is way more corrupted that Soviet system ever was...

So, Latvia is now so-called "free country", would she like to move back home? If communism era was so bad, I bet, she would like to move back to Latvia now - it's free and democracy there...But is really so? That's the question....

Sorry, this tread isn't about horny women in other countries...keep on doing solo while having good memories...

Gorbachev is a hero to the world, but a traitor to his own people. He opened the floodgates of misery into Russia. I will not be surprised if the Russians spit on his name and legacy,

Gorbachev gave people more or less freedom, so called freedom...Problem is, people don't know what to do with freedom. People, even in US doesn't know what freedom is...is it so essential to their lives, or is it so important to their leaders and media...To make people think that they are free...OF SOMETHING....They don't even know...

Not even close.

Look at China. People are dying left and right due to corruption.

At least in a capitalist system the rule of law exists and people who are corrupt eventually end up being caught and pay the price.

And we haven't even talked about the party leadership.

I think, anyone should to think about:

Hermann Goering:

“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

and

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:

The moment the slave resolves that he will no longer be a slave, his fetters fall. Freedom and slavery are mental states.

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

Latvians are not slavic. They are, in fact, Northern European and the Latvian language is next to Sanscrit in terms of ancient language branches. I believe it is the second-most ancient language branch.

she's only been in the states for about 7 years now. she received a masters here, went back to work for her home town for a couple of years, then came back.

Latvia is certainly much better off, as are all the Baltics, but today Latvia suffers the most in comparison (economically). The population is roughly 30% Russian, and they have kept the country in a perpetual state of shit.

Ah, I did not know that.

I actually thought basque was the most ancient language branch, then Tamil. I didn't know Latvian was even in there.

EDIT: Oops! Tamil, not Bantu!

😀😀

that is one load of stinky horseshit right there.

oh, but her accent is quite thick. Though, some British people over here have said that they understand her English better than they do most Americans.

:hmm:

Little to nothing you do know about what's going on in Latvia and other Baltic countries...

the languages split from a common branch. Slavic (Russian, Ukranian, Czech, etc) languages share a common ancestor with Baltic languages, much as humans do with chimps. This doesn't mean they are the same family.

Further, Estonian is not even a Baltic language--it is closer related to Finnish, as are the Estonians culturally and genetically descended from the Finns.

The Baltic people are no more slavic than are, say, the Irish.

You should stop now. ....Russians, always thinking they own something just because they sit on it.

lol. I could pull more knowledge out of my ass than whatever misinformation and BS you can spread on these pages. I know plenty, dumbass.

But if your knowledge is dependent on the highly highly anti-baltic Russian state media, then that tells me all I need to know about the koolaid you are swallowing.

lol, fucking russians. Latvia does not want to accept Russian as an official state language (2nd language).

how do Russians respond? this is discriminatory!

well, fuck off assholes! if you've been occupying a country for 60 years and further, were not kicked out after independence (which is what Lithuania and Estonia did--and they are far better for it), fyou should go ahead and learn the god damn fucking language. And since none of them want to move back to their beloved Russia (due to its deplorable shittiness and insane corruption--holy fuck gintaras, you guys are next to AFGHANISTAN as the most corrupt country in the world) b/c Latvia is a superior quality of life, then learn the motherfucking language.

I agree on the less corrupt part, but the eventually caught part is a bit naive.

"Russia Green Lights $65 Billion Siberia-Alaska Rail and Tunnel to Bridge the Bering Strait!

In what could certainly be one of the boldest infrastructure developments ever announced, the Russian Government has given the go-ahead to build a transcontinental railway linking Siberia with North America. The massive undertaking would traverse the Bering Strait with the world’s longest tunnel – a project twice the length of the Chunnel between England and France. The $65 billion project aims to feed North America with raw goods from the Siberian interior and beyond, but it could also provide a key link to developing a robust renewable energy transmission corridor that feeds wind and tidal power across vast distances while linking a railway network across 3/4 of the Northern Hemisphere."
