Being a recently-inducted fan of Dream Theater, I downloaded as many videos pertaining to them as I could off Kazaa. One was Erotomania Live. Excellent song. But the thing that got me was, at certain parts, where he wasnt using his left hand for anything, Mike Portnoy would twirl the drumstick in that hand, and then hit himself in the head two times before resuming drumming. He does this several times in fact. For those of you who have this video (I believe it is from Scenes from NY) you can check it out for yourself; the best example is around 1:50 into the song. His right hand is doing most of the drumming, so he twirls the left stick and then hits himself twice in the head. Or at least thats what it looks like :) Can someone explain to me what exactly he is doing? :p

Met him twice and a huge DT and LTE fan.

He is keeping time by hitting the beats against his head. Seen this live twice as well, his timing is so odd he needs to keep the time. Bass players, or at least I do, keep time with their thumb

Aha thats pretty cool. Confused the hell out of me the first time I saw him do it. I was sitting there watching him play, and all of a sudden he hits himself. I just could not figure out what he was doing. Thanx for the answer :)

Sure. If you have any other questions.. or you need... samples of their music, hit me up.

In the meantime check out the Siamese Monster, his newest drumset. It was much larger in concert last time

Good to see some drummers here. Yeah I remember the first time I saw a pic of his kit. I had been bragging that I had just got a 7 piece Yamaha Maple Custom. I stopped bragging then :Q :D

Any Manu Katche fans here? :D

Heh, I was wondering why he did that.

I've been a Dream Theater fan since 1998. For some reason, I can't get in to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Maybe my tastes are changing.

I thought I was the only person that had heard of them.

Nah, other folks appreciate talent too! Personally, I enjoy the Liquid Tension stuff more than the DT stuff, but that's just me.
