Calling all experts...

I have a situation with the following details:

-One IBM PIII (not sure of the model yet) Server running Windows NT 4.0 Server.
-Roles: Contains scripts for workstations to login to, handles Mdaemon (mail serving), does backups.
-We would like to upgrade to Windows 2000 Small Business Server.
-Workstations: A dozen or more Win98/NT/ME PII/PIII machines.

If this particular model of server is in the Win2K compatibilty list,
then I will definitly feel more confident in the process going smoothly.

A few questions:

-Is it as simple as popping in the CD and doing an "Upgrade"?
-If not, what will not be "Upgraded" or migrated during this upgrade process.

Any help would appreciated.

As far as compatibility for your server, check microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List. Since it's a PIII and running NT 4, chances are that it will be compatible.

If the current NT4 server is acting as a stand alone or member server, then the upgrade is extremely easy. Basically just pop in the cd and go. If it's a primary or backup domain controller then you will need to read about active directory and DNS, which are required for a domain in Windows 2000. Active Directory increases the difficulty greatly of a upgrade.

Definately take the time to read Microsoft's white papers on active directory as well as

http://www.win2000mag.com/
http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/

good luck with your upgrade.

Before you actually do the upgrade to Windows 2000 (any server version that will host Active Directory) go out and purchase either a Sybex or MS Press technical book on Active Directory. You need to learn about AD before you even start your upgrade. Also, you might want to put in a BDC and replicate your domain before you start the upgrade, then take it offline. Physically unplug the CAT5 cable. This way, if something does go wrong and you need to revert back to Windows NT 4, you have a backup.

If you have any specific questions, please let me know.

I don't believe that you can upgrade to Small Business Server from NT 4. You will probably want to look into that first. Also, you will probably have some incompatibilities with your scripts and mail program.

You can upgrade to SBS from NT 4. Your script shouldn't be an issue. What language are the scripts in?

Install your DNS Service and make sure its running just after your upgrade to Win2k finished. Then install your AD by running the dcpromo at the command line.

Not to be master of the obvious... but you cant update to NT4S to WIN2KS unless you have the latest service pack installed on the NT4 machine.
