Migrating from 1 drive RAID 0 to 2 drive RAID 0

My KKR266-R system currently runs a single HDD "striped" on RAID 0. Now I've gone and bought a new HDD and want to configure it so I will really be striping between two drives.

Here's the catch: I've installed a heap of stuff like Win2k SP 2 over an excruciatingly slow connection on my system already (why does MS persist with those silly internet installs?) so I'd prefer not to have to reformat and do a clean install when I add my new drive.

So, my question is can I migrate to a 2 drive RAID 0 setup from a 1 drive RAID 0 setup without the clean install, and if so, how?

Any advice/links would be appreciated.

😕

I'm missing something: You can't have a one-drive (physical) RAID 0 (takes two physical drives).

Anyway, get GHOST and a drive to hold the image while you add/move RAID drives. Works great.

I can understand why you wonder how I can have RAID 0 set up on one drive. I asked myself the same question when I read through my mobo manual and discovered that it is indeed possible with the Iwill KK266-R's on board RAID controller. Of course there's no performance increase with this configuration, but it seems they allow it in order to free up my two IDE channels. I couldn't think of any other reason.

Anyway, it is set up as RAID 0 on one drive right now, and I want to put another drive on the other RAID slot and start to really stripe. Thanks for the recommendation. I will check out GHOST.

Also if anyone's still reading this, my new drive is 60GB, whereas the current one is 20GB. Did I mess up when I bought the bigger one? Does anyone know if I sill I be able to stripe over two different sized drives? Oh well if not, at least I'll still have lots of space 😱

Yes you can easily stripe over those two drives, the problem is, that Raid when used with differant sized drives makes all drives the size of the smallest drive. Therefore it will seem like you have 2x20 making your 80 gigs of space into only 40 gigs, but it will still work. Yes it is possible with raid controllers to use drives on them, but they are not actually in Raid if you only have one, it is just acting like a regular IDE connector. It is not possible to stripe to one drive.

the problem with ghost and w2k is only gonna factor in if you're using NTFS 5 (like me)... There are some work arounds and boot disks available, but I strongly recommend that if u have multiple partitions, or a second drive all together, to make one FAT. Partition Magic can do that for you and i believe it's Norton Ghost 6 that is supposed to work with 2k.

EDIT: It is important to remove all the SIDs before ghosting in 2000. If you leave the SIDs on the image you're OS will crash most likely before you can even login as Administrator.
