migraines

What are some good ways to combat migraines once they have been set in motion? At this point preventative is way too late. 🙁

try a chiropractor.

seriously, i know a lot of at people think chiropractors are a big scam, but a good chiro can help with migraines.

i know because i suffer from migraines and nothing works like going to the chiropractor. when i go to the chiropractor the frequency of migranes goes down, almost to the point of disappearing.

i laso have the change other things, but the chiropractor is a good start for me.

The pain is bad enough that she cannot sleep. I have some percocet from my kidney stones but i am leary to give it to her as they are quite strong

hardcore migrane medicine. I have prescription strength crap because I get them once a month. The flashing lights in your eyes really sucks.

0uch. Migraines != fun.

Caffiene will work if you have a cluster migraine, as it will help the bloodflow issues. Ocular migraines won't be fazed though. You'll need to seek silence and darkness. In other words - sleep. Cold compress can help numb either/or. If the nausea isn't a factor, try some Tylenol/Advil.

Drink a lot of Caffeine, and quickly.

:Q

That actually worked for me for a while. Caffeine can cause migraines but for some strange reason sometimes it can help cure them as well.

Now I take 2 Advil Migraines and sleep for about an hour. 95% of the time when I wake up the migraine is gone.

?

He obviously doesn't know how a migraine works. 😛

Yes actually I do. Caffeine contricts the blood vessels in your brain, which are swollen and throbbing from the Migrane. Drinking caffeine reduces the tension. But you're right, I obviously don't know how they work.

i think that was directed at me 😀

i just didn't knwo what coffeine did 😉

I suffer from them...very rarely now...nasty things...wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy....well probably wouldn't.

I take stuff Migraleve....sometimes works, sometimes doesn't....it's where you take the orange pills at first sign and pink ones if it carries on affecting you hours later. Once it actually helped the pain a bit and stopped me from being sick...but whatever you take it needs to be at the very first sign (ie the swirling blurryness in the vision)

Sleeping and throwing up works for me. Well, I don't really have any choice about the throwing up part.

When I get my migraines, after I'm done throwing up, I lay in bed after eating a bit of toast and drinking some water or flat sprite to prevent dry heaving. After 6 hours or so of agony, the migraine slowly recedes.

when I got them when younger there was only one medication that worked, don't know the name tho.

I had to take it within 20 minutes or else I was down for the count, puking etc. within an hour.

I eventually grew out of them.

Even my neurologist couldn't tell me that they are hereditary. He simply stated that people start consistently getting them around 20-25 - and if they do, it will be for the rest of their lives. The only thing you can do is to suppress the pain, not prevent it from happening altogether. You're a step ahead if you know what your triggers are.

I started getting occular migraines about 3 years ago and it's been more frequent the past 1.5 years. I finally figured out it was MSG. About 10% of the time, it'd be something else though... and other known causes are chocolate, red wine, and cheese. Also loud music (sorry I can't give up MetallicA) or bright lights will trigger it. Yes, the blurry/blind spots suck, but in a way, they also help because they are symptoms... they tell you to pop those pills ASAP. That's how I've been able to control the pain. Neuro prescribed 5mg Zomig caplets. They are a godsend.

If I don't take them during the symptom phase, the migraine lasts a LOT longer. I agree with Corm... I would not wish them on my worst enemy. Imagine having to try and lie in bed, but the pain is so bad you can hardly lay still... not to mention the nausea that causes you to want to run to the toilet every few minutes to puke.

Ditto...bloody things.

My symptom is a blurry sort of blind spot in one eye.

I remember one night I stayed up light playing a computer game. I didn't notice the blurry spot until it was too late. I had assumed that it was due to my bleary eyes because I had been playing the game so long. I popped my pills, but 30 minutes later I threw them up. I was supposed to go to work the next morning (5:30), but I had to call in sick.

This other time, I was in high school. I had just started my english final when I noticed the blurry spot. I finished a 2 hour exam in about 30 minutes and then called my dad for a ride home. I think we pulled over about 5 times so that I could throw up.

thanks for the responses...
i have been taking zomig but when i end up taking it, its too late. i have been to the doctor at least four times this year as well as a neurologist, have had tests done.... nothing has helped.

i guess i need to start keeping a journal of what i eat and what i do before they occur.
i think they come on (for me anyways) when i am stressed out and when i dont get enough sleep.
This really sucks

What strength Zomig ? My PCP prescribed the 2.5 tablet kind but my neuro prescribed the 5mg and said it was perfectly safe to take those. I haven't had to take them too many times yet, so I can't tell if it is a big difference. Maybe you should increase the strength. There's also another drug out there that has had a good success rate, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Imitrex, from what I have read. That has some nasty side affects, unfortunately.
